Battlestar Galactica

I've heard its really good and I want to start watching it, but I don't know where to start - apparently there was a series in 1978, a miniseries and now there's also the show on the SCIFI channel. Which do I watch first? I tried watching season 1, episode 1, but that starts out with a voiceover saying "previously on...", so is the miniseries first? Can I watch the recent stuff without watching the older series?
