The man who invented the bear protection suit is back, and he's built an exoskeleton that he hopes will be adopted by Canadian and US military forces.

What I love about this story is that the thing bears such a resemblance to a HEV suit, not so much in looks but in function. "High-impact armor," suit-mounted flashlight, and it even carries its own supply of morphine. Plus the thing can withstand a shot from an elephant gun, which is pretty sweet.

I'd like to see these things picked up by the military, but I'd love to own one myself.

Dangling between the legs, that would be a clock.

I'm grinning so much right now.

Edit: k grinning over, really that suit needs a bit of streamlining methinks.

It's crap, it doesn't even cover his sides.

lol @ baseball bat to the face.
I'd buy one just so I could do that!

Wait wait, are we talking about Homer Simpson?

Woo, awesome. But they won't have that for infantry, I'm afraid. Mobility is strength.

That suit is ****ing awesome! It even looks cool.
Sure beats standard body armour. And yeah I agree about the mobility and infantry thing, maybe there could be a more streamlined model, offers similar gadgets, more mobility but less protection for the GIs
Heavy infantry anyone? :D

a soldiers life isn't worth the amount of money that's required to build a suit like that. it is ****ing awesome though. he's thought of practically everything

18 kilograms is not much, and that's the total weight of the suit

They could mass produce them for as little as $2000 he said. Also I completely disagree with this statement on many levels.

so do i, but ask the government and they're the ones that have the last say

He says it could be massproduced for $2000 which is very cheap.

Doesn't really remind me of the HEV suit but rather the suit worn by that Crysis character.

Maybe you don;t realize that soldiers typically carry in excess of 100 pounds of equipment regularly, that includes the body armor, which is very heavy, especially with the ceramic inserts.

hehe thats right, the char from HALO is what i was thinking about in the first place as well.

18 kilos is really not very heavy at all. Especially as it's spread all over your body. I also think that is $2000 per suit... which is still fairly cheap, considering how much money countries like Isreal and America spend on defence...

It's $2,000,000,000 for 1 million suits... how much does America spend on body armour a year?

It looks more like the exo skeleton from crysis

Looks pretty stupid tbh, sure it's bulletproof, but I'm sure in the desert with a full suit+helmet on it won't be that comfortable

the guy's a loon ..met the director of this documentary at a dinner party, kept us entertained with stories of troy and the various Mark armors

he's the real thing, crazy as a loon but you have to admire his determination ..watch the documentary if you get a chance, it's oddly compelling

I misread the article as 80 kilograms :rolling: I thought: OMFG thats heavy.

Well, a complete Interceptor body armor costs 1,535 $, so the Trojan is 125% more expensive, but at the same time theoretically much more effective...

another interesting invention by troy it's a paste called 1313 that is basically bulletproof.

I have to agree with stern the guy is crazy but you gotta admire his determination and hey, if something of value comes from this is he really so crazy?

watch the scene where a pickup truck rams him

oh and his main motivation is that he wants to wrestle a bear ...no really, he was attacked by a bear and survived and since then he wants to get up close and personal with bears ...seriously

btw this is one of his first armors

he couldnt move in that armor ..had to climb into it

How unusable it may be, it still looks incredibly hawt.

Those bad things are impressive. If they could put them into the doors or jeeps and such it'd give the people inside a lot of protection. He needs to invent some inpenetrable window or something, bags over windows = cant see :p

if you ask me those bags are quite impressive.

but i'm sure the technology could be cloned and greatly improved by the military.

and besides the israely army is about start mass production of advanced nanomaterial armor which have extraordinary protection qualities.

Yeah, as I said it doesn't look anything like a HEV but the features make it sound like one.

Harij is probably right though, $2k might be beyond what the government wants to spend per soldier, although DARPA for the past few years has been entertaining the idea of outfitting soldiers with exosuits that I would imagine cost something in that range, and they aren't nearly as protected as this thing. They're basically rigs that augment strength and speed.
