Hi,

my first post. Are there any benchmarks out there for Half Life 2 on Nvidia and ATI cards? I just bought a 6800 gt. I read somewhere that HL2 is supposed to run better on ATI cards. Is that true?

u can easily oc your GT to ultra speeds f.yo.

your fps will be so high anyways it wont matter the amount of boost a x800pro would have given you, if any at all.

There are some really old benchmarks if I remember correctly but they wouldn't be relevant today.

Basically the last generation of Nvidia cards was quite poor, but the newer ones will be just fine, and if your talking 6800gt frame rates will be so high it won't even matter if ATI's cards a bit faster.

ROAR!!!!! by the title i thought you had some!!!! not asking!!!!

damn you!

here is the upshot: Half Life 2 is programmed in 24 bit. Nvidia geforce FX cards (so not including geforce 6, 4, 3, 2. Geforce 6 is the 6800 ;) ) were programmed to run 16 and 32 bit games, not 24 bit. This was a HUGE problem as a FX5900 was running the game at about 20fps, everything below it was basically unplayable. This lead to another not so well known delay: Valve was forced to re-program parts of the game in 16-bit. o_O!!! So there you go. It sucks ass! Valve recommends that ALL users with an FX series based card run the game in dx 8 mode, even though all FX cards support dx 9. But anyone with a gefoce 6 or higher will be saved. Geforce 4, 3, 2 all support 24 bit, but don't support direct x 9, meaning that they have to use dx8 anyways. sucks to use nvidia.

who cares if x800 runs better? your already gonna have 60+fps

Basically only 2 or 3 cards on nvidia's line that can use DX9...Thats just horrible :(

Thank Jebus! I just ordered a 6800GT on Friday (should get it this week) upgrading from a Radeon 9700 Pro. Did some research and determined that the 6800GT was the card for me. All of a sudden today I remember, with horror, that GeForce cards had probs with HL2. I never paid attention originally because I had a Radeon. Ironic because I don't care about Doom 3, but am most looking forward to HL2.

Yeah don't worry cause with the 6800 all those problems are a thing of the past.

Well, some sites have done benchmarks using the stolen files... with the new series of cards, nvidia wins without aa/af (barely) and ati wins with aa/af (barely)

you're good which ever why you go.

9600xt

Yea, will the 9600XT be able to run HL2 no prob? or would the 9800pro be better?

I would go 9800 pro. I have one and I think it's a pretty damn good card.

well will the 9600XT be able to run it at max? will the 9800 Pro be able to do that? i dont like to run on low res, lol.
although this im sure is quite irrelivent, wouldnt the 9600XT be able to run HL2 very well since they're giving it with the card?

I dont think the 9600 xt will run HL2 at full detail, but if you overclock the 9800 pro to XT spec it should be fine, assuming the rest of your system is up to the task.

I used to own a 9600 xt but I have upgraded to the far superior 9800 pro. If you do get a 9800 pro, make sure you get one with the R360 core (MSI 9800 pro has that core, I think some Sapphire cards do aswell). Also make sure it has 256 bit memory. This way you can overclock it to XT specs, or even flash the XT bios onto the card. I haven't bothered with the bios flash but my card shows up as an XT in SiSoft Sandra anyway.

I'm comfortably running 435/378 compared to the stock 378/338.

Get this very strait. The 9600XT will be able to run the game on high. The 9600XT will look EXACTLY the same as the 9800XT. What{s the difference? Framerate. You will be pleased with ur framerate as the 9600pro got above 40 in dx9 mode in an EARLY (legal but not public) alpha. Therefore expect the 9600XT to get above 40 in dx9 mode (which is basically equivalent to the highest setting.)

After all the 9600xt is prefered graphics right? good. I have a 9600xt as well and it is running doom 3 on high 1024x768 at around 20-30 fps.

Was thinking of the MSI card myself...

Good buy at newegg.com right now for it. Good software package and most people are reporting the R360 core.

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-127-127&depa=0

$193 (for today-add a few bucks when the sale ends) with .99 cent shipping...hard to beat that for a retail 9800 pro with a R360.

Yup I recently bought myself an MSI 9800 pro 128mb 256bit R360 core. My computer recognises it as a 9800 XT, which is fine by me ;)

Excellent card, my 3d marks jumped from 3500 up to 6500 :)

Edit - oh yeah, and the software package is huge. 11 CDs!! Duke Nukem Manhatten Project kicks ass.

is it a 9800XT? it shouldn't recognize the wrong card. Oh, and does anyone know what core the 9600XT uses? it it also a r360? or just r300. what about the 9100?

thanks.

The MSI we're talking about isn't a 9800xt card by product name, but it uses the same core (R360) whereas the original 9800pros use the R350.

Most people are reporting that it shows up as an 9800xt, though so nothing wrong going on. From everything I've read, just seems like it's an underclocked XT.

The 9600xt uses the same core (R360) but has less pipes (4 vs 8) and 128bit memory (vs 256 bit) vs 9800PRO/XT. I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) the 9600PRO version uses the R350 core?

And, again someone correct me if wrong, but I think the 9100 used the R200?

The 9600XT uses the RV360 Core, 9600 Pro RV350, 9100 is a dx8 card so uses R200.

Yeah the RV360 core in the 9600xt is different from the R360 in the 9800xt.

this is the second post ive seen where someone said they are running doom 3 on high 1024x768 at around 20-30 fps with the 9600xt. I am running doom 3 with my 9600xt on 640x480 on medium and it still slows down to 8-10 fps during bit parts. I have the latest drivers and everything. how are you running doom 3 so well?

I have a strange feeling alot of people are bullshitting about their Doom 3 performance. Either that, or they are alot more tolerant than me of slow-downs. I have an Athlon XP 2500 @2.95GHz, 512mb and 9800 pro @XT specs and I run Doom 3 on meduim 1024*768 with no AA. I can run high details, but it bogs down when I open some doors or in some combat scenes. Nothing ruins a game for me like annoying pauses and slowdowns.

People that have their drivers recongize their 9800pro as a xt, yur gonna have to do some tinkering w/the bios in order to RUN it has a 9800xt. Your gonna have to flash the card using a 9800xt bios. From there your card is running as a full XT and also you get to use that overdrive featurea as well as temp sensors.

There is no real advantage to flashing to the XT bios. The only things gained are overdrive (pointless because I overclock manually) and a temperature guage (mildly useful).
