I dunno how many of you are familiar with Berlusconi, the leader of Italy, but there has been a lot of controversies about him.

Amongst other things, he has been implicated to have had underage strippers at his mansion during a new years eve party, he's also been implicated to have participated in sex orgies with several prostitutes.

He als owns the majority of Italian media, and whenever one of these controversies appears, he blames it on the "Leftist media conspiracists".

I was just wondering if any of you guys are familiar with this character and what you think of him.

Personally I think he seems disgusting, a perverted old man, and an extremely corrupt politician that uses his political powers to gain a monopoly of the media.

If there's anyone in here that actually lives in Italy and would like to share their view on Berlusconi, I'd appreciate it!

Yeah that's been my impression so far, the thing that creeps me out is, despite all his bs, he still seems to be loved by many italians?

Italy is a bit of a joke right now, or at least it's portrayed that way, and I think he's contributed to that significantly.

I am Italian and, unfortunately, I am familiar with Mr. Berlusconi :( :(
You know, italians and (the rest of the world) have a different approach to this kind of... matters: in America, sexual scandals hurt your reputation as a national leader (Bill, I'm looking at you). In Italy, well, you are simply a cool guy with a lot of money, having fun...

So it doesn't bother you when a leader of a nation violates multiple laws, including having an underage girl(16 years old) give him and his guests a striptease?

I dont know what the circumstances were. provide a source . is he facing any charges? any at all in relation with the underage striptease thing? it seems to me he probably wouldnt be in a position of power if there was any solid evidence he did something illegal.

if it's just a moral issue and no laws have been broken ...then I'm not really bothered by it

Nope, he can't be tried afaik, also for sources just google, there's plenty of'em, but remember he owns a large portion of Italy, hence he uses media etc to supress the information. Also, since in 2008 he passed the Lodo Alfano bill, which prevents the highest members of the government to be tried for crimes during their terms, it means he's effectively safe from any form of trials etc at the moment.

this is not really my responsibility. you made the accusations it's up to you to support your claims with sources. wiki makes no mention of any such incident. unless you mean the 18 year old. and if so, she's not a minor

cant find any english versions so I cant comment on it

personally I dont care for him as he's a right wing fascist buffoon but I dont think his "loose morals" should be reason enough to dispose him from power

You are totally right. The leadership of Mr. Berlusconi is entirely based on personal charisma and control of media. He knows the laws of communication and he knows how to impress people. The sexual scandals will be quickly forgotten. To be honest, I have to say that opposition parties are incapable of offering a believable alternative.

Berlusconi's numerous problems with the law are well-known. He's been brought to trial several times and through changing the law, delaying until the statute of limitations expired or other finagling he's avoided being found guilty. His ties to the Mafia are also widely suspected, but so far not proven (I think). To focus on his history of shall we say inappropriate conduct with women is not really seeing the big picture.

Oink Oink!.

No seriously though, all of Europe knows Italy is owned by the mafia, or at least an extremely corrupt place.

Or so it appears, it could all be too many Gangster movies + Berlusconi's shining influence on foreign opinion.

Mafia is a big problem: yes.
Italy is owned by mafia: no, that's a commonplace ;)

EDIT: Berlusconi is a pig: definitely yes.

I do have to ask the question also, how widespread is nationalist ideals in Italy PaoloM?

Are many Italians still in love with the idea of a rebuilt Roman Empire, like Mussolini talked about?

First of all, you have to understand that Italy has always been a divided country. Italy has been united in 1861, less than a century and a half ago. So, italians are very different in dialects and cultures, from area to area. Northern, central and southern Italy are like different countries in their own.
I would say that italians don't have strong nationalist ideals. On the contrary, northern people like to keep themselves distinct from southern citizens. There are strong internal forms of racism. When you talk about Italy, it would be very important to consider what part of Italy you are talking about.
Also, italians tend to be very critical about themselves and the problems of their country. I would say that italians are very smart, capable of great things, but they are highly unorganized and a bit lazy. And mafia is a problem, for sure, but not totally widespread along the country. Unfortunately, when mobsters built their empire in the US, people started thinking that all italians are mafia-men. That's not true.

Are many Italians still in love with the idea of a rebuilt Roman Empire, like Mussolini talked about?

Not at all. Some far-right political parties may embrace the idea of a strong, dominating Italy. But that's not a widespread feeling. Mussolini, as a dictator, is generally hated by italians.

Personally I think he seems disgusting, a perverted old man, and an extremely corrupt politician that uses his political powers to gain a monopoly of the media.

I thought it happened the other way around.

Also I don't understand why there's a question mark in the thread title.

well look what happened to be on cracked today... please keep in mind I have no idea what you guys are talking about.

I hate that berlusconi is some anoying millonaire that thinks he is so great and all that crap and people go kiss his balls for that

And yeah, berlusconi is a dick.

Its quite funny how we have stereotypical leaders of our respective European countries right now. Berlusconi the slimeball, sarko the small French noob, and Gordon Brown the grumpy humourless git that he is.
