As you all know, i work at best buy. As thought they have changed the RSS release date yet again. Whyll some companies still have 3-31-04 // 4-01-04 as their target date many companys have switched to the month of augest.

Best buys..... new current date on the system is 08-26-2004.

Again i dont know where they get these numbers i just find it funny that they must get information that we dont, that gives them that extra bit of insight that vivendi doesnt want to share with us.

Again anyone who works at a best buy pull it up on rss to back me up.

I know dozens of people in the industry - the release dates are made up. They know what we do - absolutely nothing.

How many pre-orders would they get if they wrote the truth?

"Half-Life 2 coming somewhen! Maybe."

Guessed as much- With the way things are looking, half-life 2 would have been the only thing on the market, now it gets to compete with games like Ut2004, painkiller (whoot), and FARCRY and stalker i belive is also about to come out.

Yeah, it's really a shame, because while I do believe HL2 will be a fantastic game it certainly has stiff competition in all of those games you've just listed. I'm not really sure when Doom 3 is coming out (I don't think anyone is) but obviously that's a strong contender in the FPS genre.

Had the game come out last September, we would have all been blown away. I just hope they've used all of this time constructively.

i did forget to mention doom 3, im depressed 4 player multiplayer sucks.

You can easily change it, the 4 player limit was just a homage to the original DooM. It is just info stored in a text file, last time I read.

Up the limit and I'm sure serious lag will ensue, Doom 3's supposed to not be a very solid multiplayer game.

Why are pre-orders so important to retailers? Is it because they get money for giving you nothing?

I'm sure it's the fact that many people want to ensure that they get their game on the release date, on time... a retailer that offers this pre-order service for a little cheaper than the other sites will in the end make alot more money than the others. For example, I'll mostly always use gameplay because they usually have cheaper prices for games. I've never really given any other site a chance since.

money for giving you nothing? all retailers i've ever used for pre-orders have worked on the basis that no money is taken from your account until they dispatch the order, and none of them have ever tried to pinch it early. I wouldnt order from a company that didnt use this policy as id be worried that id lose my money and never see the product, and tbh didnt realise any did.

will make a good birthday present then :) tbh i can see another TF2 comin on :(

Too much riding on HL2 for it to disappear into oblivion..

Can the Best Buy RSS accept dates like "TBC" or "TBA" or does the system have to actually have a date to keep it happy?

After September 30, 2003, I can just picture Gabe calling everybody into his office and adamantly stating, "That's the last time we announce a game before it's ready to ship!"

Wow! it's my birthday too! what a birthday present that would be!

/me hopes.

We dont enter the information into it. I have never seen one with a TBA in the system though.

Heh, my birthday is 8-25. That'd be a k-rad belated birthday present if that were true. Here's to hoping for us Virgos!

I know you don't yourself.

All I'm thinking is that the release date there, is just a revised one based on the fact that Vivendi announced that the game was no longer scheduled for April but instead, TBC. If their system can't accept TBC as a date then they'd need to put something in there.
