K Guys just need to know whats the best CPU i can get for round about £160 doesnt really matter if its OEM or Retail i jsut want it for performance. I was going to get the 2.8c Intel one. and just wonder if the AMD 3200+ was better? its roughly the same price anyone got any reliable benchmarks :P. will help alot :)

ta guys u rocks :)

Best bang for buck is without a doubt the AMD XP 2500+, it's cheap, fast and very overclockable. You save some extra cash for some nice RAM or something else. EDIT: Another very good one is the 2800+, also cheap but not quite as

If you want to go a little more expensive the hot CPU at the moment is the AMD 64 3000+ I think it retails for about 240 US$. It's only slightly slower than the AMD 64 3200+, and once 64 bit software begins rolling of the shelf you'll have a 'free' 30 % upgrade (Gabe himself mentioned a 64 bit HL2)

I have the AMD 64 3200+ it's very very very very fast and very stable, I love it. The price was high but it wasn't my own money so what the hey.

I personally stay away from intel they're overpriced imho (coming from an early adopter of the AMD 64 :P) and I don't much like Intel as a company.

:afro:

well i suggest this link which is an intel pentium 4 2.8ghz 800mhz fsb
i myself have one and it is a great processor, altho more expensive maybe that the athlon 3200+ or wotever i would choose intel. but thats only because i personally prefer them for my own reasons.

this might be a dumb question but whats faster.

AMD 64 3000+ or the normal 3200+ ;x

AMD 64 3200+ because it is 64 bit instead of the ordinary AMD 3200+ which is only 32 bit

the AMD 64 3000+ and 3200+ are both faster than the XP 3200+, Also when running native 32 bit code. And of course they run 64 bit code which the XP doesn't.

Right, Athlon 64 3200> Athlon 64 3000> Athlon XP 3200+.
But the Athlon 64 3000+ is soo close to the Athlon 64 3200+ because they run at the same clock speed. No reason to get the either 3200+ models. lol
Although the 3400+ now...

ok ty guys i may get the AMD 64.. Where abouts is the Amd 64 3000+ comapred to Intel CPU's. ie what it run the same as :D

Get the AM Athlon64 FX-51 for only $749USD at newegg :). Just kidding, its a waste of money. If you're gonna get an athlon64, at least wait for the 939 pin or whatever one. Dont waste your money on the one out at the moment. There's also the pentium4 3.2GhzEE (extreme edition) for 999USD at newegg. That thingis a beast, yet way overpriced and beats the FX is some tests.

Anyways, for the price, I would suggest going with the pentium. You will have better performance and overclockability. Go to known forums like sharkforums.com or anandtech or whatever and they'll help you out. Good luck with your purchase. Either way, you'll have a nice processor. ;) hehe

Athon 64 3000+ Review
What is your budget for a motherboard? Because the price ranges can be different between Athlon XP, Pentium 4 and Athlon 64 boards.

about £150-180 @ CPU

and about £80-100 on mobo

Yea you'd probably get more bang per buck with AMD, and if you're going with Intel, avoid Celerons at all costs.

You will be able to get a good motherboard with good features in that pricerange by going with an Athlon XP system. You could get a bit better CPU on the Intel side for that CPU price range but then the board price range you have would mute the performance/features possible IMO (Not just RAID options but on the Chipset performance etc).

k tyyyyyyy

can u gimme a good combo mobo/cpu? i will be getting CorsairXMS TwinX 1gb 3200

was gunan get a Asus P4C800 / 2.8

what about amd for the same price?

Damn i wish i was in usa so i could order thx alot dood i may go witht he AMD 64... Do them board offer on board sound? one that at least is good for onboard. also which wud u choose. gunna see if i can findr a cheap UK supplier thanks alot :)

Yeah they have onboard sound. Here is a review on that Abit KV8-MAX3 board.

The KV8-MAX3 uses the newest and best version of the Realtek audio codec called ALC658. This audio chip features Dolby Digital 6-channel sound and UAJ or Universal Audio Jack. This allows automatic jack programming as we've seen on some boards based on Intel's 865/875 chipsets. Realtek markets the ALC658 as a premium sound solution, and their first 2.3 compliant audio codec.

k ty again, :P just been looking at sum UK sites for the A64 cheapest ive seen is about £170 about 300 Dollars gunna have to keep looking.. might have a look on ebay.. thx alot tho.. been reading the reviews seems AMD64 is good for its price :P and it does quite well with the 3.2ghz .. so gunna see if i can get it bit cheaper anywhere in the uk.. thx m8 :)

Athlon 64 3000> Athlon XP 3200+
With that in mind it's pretty interesting to note that the Athlon64 3000 goes for $211, while the AthlonXP 3200+ goes for $207. Only a 4 dollars difference in price, yet the difference in speed is huge.

Yeah AMD didn't do a very good job on the XP 3200+. They were really overstretching the k7 core. Now they're rectifying it and doing a good job at that. the AMD 64 3000+ is slightly faster than the P4 3200 C

damn u guys have pursuaded me to get an AMD 64 only really like ten pound more than the 2.8c intel which i find strange. just gotta find a good retailer in uk then im sorted anyone know any cheap retailers?. might try ask one of the ebay business in the USA to sell sum :P. and ship em over here dunno tho gunna have another look in uk first. ta guys

haha

Yeah the XP 3200 is really close to the 2700+ in core clock just with more FSB bandwidth and added L2 cache which helps out. Basicly a suped up and slightly OCed 2700+.

another one is http://www.komplett.co.uk

I got mine from http://www.komplett.no here in Norway, very satisfied.

thx again guys.. i looked at komplett uk site earlier they only have the AMD 64 3200+ they dont sell the 3000+ i dunno if its out of stock or wot :(. did u get your 3000+ from the Norway site or was it the 3200+

I got the 3200+, but that was before the 3000+ otherwise I would have gotten that. Seems silly to pay double for almost the same speed :)

:afro:

Yeah but you don't pay double for a 3200 compared to a 3000+ any more.
3400+ 404$
3200+ 270$
3000+ 211$

Although it is still 60$ less for almost the same performance.

I agree, the AMD64 sytem will provide you with much more options later for gaming using 64bit clients offerning significant perfomance boosts. The price is finally right for the mainstream consumer at great performance levels for the next gen games.
