Which is the best GForce FX 5600 ultra to get, perferably the 256mb one, but then agian i have a limited budget. I really need to spend my money wisely. I have no plans of buying it untill just before HL².

none of them, all the FX Series suck except the FX 5900 Ultra, which stills sucks compared to the 9800 Pro. get a Ti 4200, they are cheap, and very solid. but, they dont have DX9 features.

Ok, well first off the 5900 does NOT suck compared to the 9800. They are practically the same, almost identical. They both have ther advantages and disadvantages in each test. The ti4200 is basically on par with the normal 5600 in terms of raw performance. Getting a 5600ultra 256mb, would probly be a ti4400 or ti4600 raw performance. The 5600 is also a DX9 card, the ti4200 isnt.

I would reccommend getting a 9500 pro if you can find one, if you cant get a 9600 pro. Both will be a better choice then the 5600.

well to answer your topic rather than ranting about ati...

id say go for MSI 5600 ultra card 128-256 (id say 256 while it isnt much use now it will be later on...)

or teh leadtek 5600 ultra laso with 256 meg ram...

if you have no problems iwth spending money...

i think Gainward 5600 Ultra would be a beast (the golden sample is three beefed up card brand... worthwhile if you have the cash...)

p.s to the guy who said the fx series is crap... you couldnt be further from the truth...

TheRook

pps if you do end up going for an ati card go for the 9500pro because the 9600 only has 4 pipelines instead of 8 and it does knock the performance although its a good card...

LMAO, we can all see you surely are a "rook" Nobodys ranting about ATi. The FX series IS crap, except for the 5900U. Thanks for rephrasing my post also. He cant just go for the 9500 pro unless he can find one, its not made anymore, though im sure you knew that, rookie:rolleyes:

from the word "rook" you call me a rookie?

so you couldnt think of rook as in the chess piece (castle-for the uneducated of you)

or perhaps rook as in teh bird similar to a crow... but witha yellow beak?

or perhaps my last name happens to be Deroeck when pronounced it sounds similar to therook? could that be it?

no... lets just assume hes a rookie... because after all "you" know best... being that all the fx series cards apart from the 5900ultra suck...

oh wait that means all ATi's cards apart from the 9800pro suck... because they dont have the same performance as the 9800 pro...

your an ass...

POINT AND LAUGH!!!!

Hmm i obviously chose to use rook as "rookie" because your post was n00bish, get it now???

No, all cards apart from the 9800 pro dont suck, go read some reviews, come back and tell me who is in the lead with their current line of cards, ATi or Nvidia?

EDIT: Sorry for that, but do you really know, how repetitive and annoying it is to have flame wars like this? Ive been here for 2 months helping people make the right decision with there hardware, but theres always those stupid fanboys(not saying your one) that come along and try and prove you wrong. No matter what true facts you tell them, they will ignore it. All the forum elders here are just tired of having these people argue every day.

Sorry

why dont they suck? there not as good as the 9800pro so they must be crap!

the 5600 isnt as good as the 5900ultra so that must be crap also...

edit

its not the fanboy thing that annoys me (well actual it is...) but the fact he asks about a 5600 ultra with 256 meg ram... and you refer him to the 9500pro... which ill agree is a good card... but not the one he wanted information on...

Look, im done arguing like this. Ill just say it nicely. The FX series lag behind there radeon equivelants. The FX 5600 is behind the 9500pro and 9600 pro by quite alot. Dont even argue on this, cause you know it and i know it. The FX 5200 is just a piece of sh*t

Well its very clear that the majority of this board is in favor of ATI. But so far none of the answers given have been correct. There are 3 different models of the Geforce FX5600 first of all.

FX 5600 256mb
FX 5600 128mb Ultra (old)
FX 5600 128mb Ultra (new)

The 256mb model is overpriced and actually performs slower than a TI4200.

The 128mb Ultra (old) is a decent card which performs right around the level of a TI4200 with the benefits of dx9.

The 128mb Ultra (new) *aka, flip chip. Is actually a very good performer and outperforms the 9600pro and 9500pro in the majority of tests and in game performance.

So if you get a 5600 make sure you get a 128mb Ultra with the 400mhz core clock speed and you'll be very happy.

Its not so much that i favor ATI ..... Ive just read so many bad things about the FX series it leads me to believe that ATI currently has its shit together while nvidia does not.

thanks jbscotchman you gave me the info i needed, no all i need to know is what company distributs it (chaintech, gainward, etc)

If you can get a gainward goldensample, get it. That's a great line of cards. I've heard MSI isn't half-bad either.

Very good article, read it. link
the original 9600 suxed..so did the 5600.
ATI redid the 9600 with better clock speed and nvidia recently did also.
There were a lot of reviews on the midrange cards about the time ATI just redid the 9600 and at the time the 5600 was still in the old version.
Both ATI and Nvidia are solid choices.
Notice for the Toms Hardware Pick was a MSI 5600.
