Best laptop under $1000?

So apparently for graduation I'll be getting $1000 as a gift from my grandparents towards buying a laptop for college. Now, I've neither had a laptop before nor shopped for one, so I'm not very well versed in the best brands or specs.

What, in your opinion, is the best laptop out today for $1000 or less? I'd probably be able to go a little higher though, up to maybe $1300.

This depends on what you want, portability or functionality?

Most of the big name brands are fine, one thing that you must get is extended warranty. As a general rule of thumb, laptops are generally easy to break down and this is where warranty can really save you a lot of time / money.

I've gone through my fair share of laptops (I've used 3 different brands) and each one has broken down at some point within the warranty period. I'd say you should aim for at least 3 years.
