Best laptops/notebooks?

I'm looking into getting a laptop and, having lived in a desktop world my whole techie life, know nothing about them. I wanted to see what you guys thought were the best makes (dell, hp, macs ibook, ect.) and what I could get for under 1100$, I'll definatly need a dvd/cd+rw with it.

i'm not sure what you cna get for that cheap thatinclude a DVD CD/RW.... laptops are generaly fairly expensive....

I know Alienware and Voodoo PC now make gaming laptops, and Dell makes quality laptops as well...

Dell has refurbirshed notebooks, maybe I could find a dvd+rw in there. Hmmm.. *strokes chin*

If you want a good general laptop go with Toshiba.
Toshiba makes a lot of other laptop parts (lcds) for other brands.
If you are really thinking about gaming then look for ones with a 9600 moble GPU.
Dell usually has the best laptop out of HP/Compaq etc but is not for the most demanding people.
