I'm looking at another MMORPG (probably WoW). I've tried Everquest 2 (to lvl20), Starwars Galaxies (to lvl40) and Knights Online (to lvl50).

Intrested in what people think to be the best out there? I would like to try PVP. Opinions anyone?

Thanks.

guild wars is quite a good deal for the amount of money you spend on it and how much play time you can get out of it.

I have yet to be attracted to a MMO. Just hasnt happened yet. My perfect Command and Conquer MMO :( Or my Deus Ex world MMO :(

WoW was pretty good...complete time sink though and gets boring after playing 16 hours a day for 6 months. So its a pretty good deal.

The best is EVE. The only mmorpg (that I know of) where player-controlled economy actually is a huge part of the game. Also the only mmorpg (that I know of) where all the players are in the same consistent (albeit huge) world. Also one of few mmorpgs with autopilot ftw!

Going to WoW after EVE was like going to work after staying up all night partying.

I would really like to play Guild Wars - after playing WoW & then researching Guild wars, it appears that all the major dislikes I had for WoW are fixed in Guild wars (PVP, Pay-Per Month, time required, etc). I really can't say much since I haven't played much, but my PERSPECTIVe is that Guild Wars is probably the best.

I know that's ignorant, but I thought I'd contribute my ignorant opinion :)

P.S. I haven't played Guild Wars yet, becasue I priomised myself that I wouldn't play any MMO until I got a QUALITY job (not just any job).

Well if you are interested in PvP, then Guild Wars it the way to go. You can skip all the grinding and go straight to PvP...or you can level up a character in the story campaign and "unlock" all the goodies (like skills and weapon mods) for your PvP characters.

Plus Factions (the new expansion, it's a stand alone so you don't need the original...might be a good buy) promises war fronts and all for it's PvP :D

Ultima Online, just after its release, beats all modern MMORPGs hands down.

Eve online is a scary game.

I go venture to the meanest and badest pirate base I could find, apparently people sit at gates to protect them. Gawd, I was in a lil' shuttle and I had atleast 7 battleships on me. It took them 30 seconds to kill me to my surpise. I was still surprised.

Eve is awesome, but it's just not for everyone. Give the 14-day trial a go at least to see if you like it. I'm playing it right now actually lol...

Other than that, guild wars because it's cheap!

Agreed! You can't go wrong with no monthly fees.

However there is also a lot of content and the game is really quite fun, especially if you are looking for PvP. Watch for a free play even or the upcomming expansion which has an expanded PvP game.

Vanguard! :D (when it's out)

Till then, WoW's fun for awhile, if you can find people around your level to group with. Been meaning to try out Guild Wars, but Oblivion's taking up all my time right now (which is pretty much just a single player MMO anyway).

Whats so good about Eve then? I hear loads of praise but no explinations at to why.

I would reccomend you take a look at City of Villains. It may not be your cup of tea (it wasn't for me after a few months) but, then again, it might...

WoW is just good. Some people will go on and on about how bad it is, how it's evil or a waste of time, but you really have to try it. There's a good chance you'll absolutely love it - and even after you get bored of PvP and endgame instances, there's always roleplay.

In fact, I'm going to extend this 'give it a go' advice. Most, if not all MMOs have a free trial. Try them all out before you choose which one to commit yourself to. I think it's very much a case of there being an MMO to suit every sensibility. Try WoW, Eve, and City of Heroes/Villains. And just buy Guild Wars anyway since it's cheap.

WoW is fun, addictive, pretty and huge. Its philosophy is to try and minimise pain and strife. You can't really harm other members of your faction, you can't significantly **** up the game for your enemies bar killing them and you can't lose your gear or your xp. It's very much a closed system, albeit a very fun one.

Eve is completely the opposite. Total freedom, player-run economy, but you can really get shafted. Like life.

I think the two main contenders are WoW and EVE. Like Sulk said, WoW is very secure and safe, whilst EVE is just a completely open world with endless oppertunities. However, the latter is incredibly daunting and this certainly put me off. It all depends on what your preferences are, really.

Oh, and Guild Wars isn't a massively multiplayer online game. It's online, but it's certainly not massive. It has no economy, and everywhere's instanced except for the cities. Not only that but the game world looks drab and boring. It certainly wont keep you playing for very long - you can get to the maximum level in a week or so. SURE, it doesn't have a monthly fee, but niether do the thousands of other games out there which are far more fun than Guild Wars. The reason you have to pay monthly for WoW or Eve is because they're MMOs.

*sigh*

First of all, here are just a few of the drab environments:

I'm thinking about just writing up a rant just to paste into any thread that starts this ignorant bashing of Guild Wars. One reason so many people are disappointed with it is because they are stricken with square peg / round hole syndrome. They want it to be a traditional MMO, and it's not. Instead it's more like a strategy/RPG hybrid with a heavy emphasis on PvP. I'm not claiming it's for everyone, because it most definitely is not. But I am claiming that most people don't understand half of what it has to offer.

So here's something I wrote in defense on another forum:
It amazes me how many people absolutely miss the point of Guild Wars. Here's the thing: if you compare WoW's strengths with those same aspects in GW, sure the latter just doesn't compare. Sure, there isn't tons of varied loot. Sure, you can't become uber godly and smite n00bs with a flick of the wrist. Sure, you can't carry as many skills as you'd like. That is because implementing these things would work AGAINST what this game is about.

At it's core, Guild Wars is built for PvP. And as such, it has to be utterly balanced. Imagine if you were playing Unreal Tournament, and each one of the guns had to be unlocked before use. Beginners would have only the assault rifle. More time grinding would lead to better guns, until the pros would spawn with Redeemers (for the uninitiated, mini-nukes). In order to compete at all, you'd have to spend HOURS UPON HOURS of PAINSTAKINGLY DULL grinding against fools running around nuking everything that moves.

Fun?

And again, anyone who claims that being able to carry only eight skills is a flaw is completely missing the point. Choosing which eight skills to use, and making a skill set in which every skill works together towards a common purpose is half the fun of this game. The strategery is only multiplied when you're playing on teams of 8 vs 8 - not only must your own build be cogent and coherent, but it must itself work within the context of seven other people. (See the beautiful numerical symmetry here? 8 skills to a build, 8 members to a team...)

If this does not sound fun to you, then GW is not your thing. It may keep you entertained for awhile, but it will not be your next World of Warcraft. For someone who loves such strategy, however, Guild Wars is your ticket to heaven.

Guild Wars is boring. I get what it "is". I was expecting what it "is". I knew what I was getting into. It was just boring, even PvP, which IS the game, is boring. Rant all you want, it was a waste of $50.

WoW is fun for a while, except that leveling just seemed like a race to 60, not much enjoyment level to level, and endgame isn't fun, at all.

Vanguard seems promising.

Never tried Eve, but heard it was good and the concept seems unique and fun.

PlanetSide...for MMOFPS.

I'm waiting for the perfect science fiction MMORPG.

I was lucky enough to be around earlier on when people were still getting into the game and 1-59 was still interesting. Sure, it was still trying to get to 60, but it was having fun along the way and not rushing it. Since Blizz went raid crazy though, pre-endgame has become a total grind =/

Whats that one where the city's are player built?

You're probably thinking of either Star Wars Galaxies or Shadowbane.

Oh, and the 8-skills only thing from GW sounds great to me. Having to clamp on a bunch of UI mods just to be able to FIT everything on some of my WoW characters is a real pain. As long as the skills are designed around this (as opposed to Oblivion's "here's a shit ton of spells and items jammed into a tiny, unmanagable journal - and here's 8 buttons to map em to, have fun!").

Vanguard plans something like this, giving you a limited number of slots to map your abilities to, so you'll have to plan things out from area to area, dungeon to dungeon, or even battle to battle. You'll be able to switch em around anytime though (hopefully only out of combat, otherwise it'll be wide open to UI exploits).
