I thought id start this thread , seeing as there was one for the guns.
My fav is probably dust_2 for its mix of close range areas, as well as places for snipers.
Inferno is really cool in source as well.

Dust 2

I actually don't like the majority of CS maps - they offer too many hiding spots, which encourage sneaking around and camping. The Dust maps don't, and this is why they're by far the most popular and fun to play.

It takes no skill to hide some place and wait for ppl to walk into your crosshair. Try that on a decent map and you'll get nowhere. Find a map where playing like this reaps rewards, and (imo) it's a crap map.

Even some of the more popular maps like Office rely a great deal on luck over skill. How many times have you watched two people sneaking about - just for one of them to shoot the other in the back? In the vast majority of cases the person who won that fight didn't do so through skill - but by luck. In many others he just bored his opponent, quite literally, to death.

The newer maps are especially guilty - and are too complex for their own good. Having to check 7 different hiding spots whe you enter the room certainly does not improve the game in anyway. If you take your time and sneak about checking them all you run the risk of getting nailed in the back (the people who spend their whole time sneaking about in CS tend to do very badly) If you charge in and check them all very quickly there's a very good chance that, again, you'll be nailed in the back by the guy/s hiding there.

There is place for stealth in CS, but not when it encourages unskillful play.

(of course, clan matches are very different - and many of these maps work well. On Publics they can be a spam-a-thon lotto of who sees who first)

I think chateau is one of the best maps. Maybe the most balanced map of them all, yet nobody plays it  I use to like office when I first got into CS but now I can't stand it, too much of a deathmatch map and like warbie said.....winning is usually based on luck. Yeah skill comes into play of course but 80% of the time when your shooting someone you get shot in the back with a shotty.

I don't mind compound but I would like it alot better if you could use that tunnel to the right of CT spawn and say.....come up behind the hostie shack but on the other side of the wall.

CS_Havana is the greatest map EVAR!!!!!!! :monkee:

Beam, I know, Chateau is my second favorite map, it's just I can't find any 24/7 servers on Chateau! Bah!

Office is my favorite, and I do believe it's balanced.

Is this for official maps or any custom maps?

My fav map is de_bedbugs or de_deathcookin, but my fav official map is de_dust2

dust2 is definately my favorite, though i like aztec and cbble as well. dust2s balance is unmatched by any other map. I agree with one of the previous posters, most of the CS maps arent much fun in public play. de_cbble for example is a great matching map, but play on a 20 man pub server and its a sniper camp fest.

Office. I wish Valve would make a new office map though, cs_office2 or something. I dunno, I just love office buildings.

oilrig!!! ha, well that'd be for 1.6 but im just kidding lol....I'd have to say either assault or office.

They should make it a high-rise like the Sears Tower complete with a 120-levels and mini nuclear bomb. And be able to go onto the roof and jump off!!!

w00t another oilrig fan!

I like all the maps apart from compound and port, my favorite would have to be inferno, italy and oilrig are better than inferno but:

1. I hate italy in source

2. Obviously, oilrig is not in source yet.

Chateau & Train would be after inferno.

A bit off topic but I'm still waiting for around 10 more maps to be ported from 1.6 to come. They are:

oilrig
nuke
torn
storm
militia
survivor
estate
vertigo
backalley
airstrip

Estate is an awesome map, nice to see some people who like it.

Just FYI if you didn't know... these maps are already being developed by the community, search for em on google. Yes some are in beta and yes they aren't made by Valve or TurtleRock =) but the backalley (cs_backalley2005f) and militia (cs_militia_tm2) conversions are pretty well done.

Fave cs:s map has got to be de_dust. After years and years of playing it in CS 1.1+, it's pretty easy to own =D and it's still fun.

I like Italy a lot. It has a bunch of different areas that mix close up and sniper style play, and no one side has the capacity to own the map within seconds of spawning.

Dust is great, still like it better than dust2 for some reason. I'm also dying for militia, nuke and backalley, plus a few others to be converted. I stopped playing CS for a few years until HL2 came along, and now that I've gone back, I'm amazed with how much I'd forgotten about it...all these maps that haven't entered my mind in years suddenly seeming like old friends. Weird.

BTW, when I'm having a bad night (often) I hate every single one of the maps.
