I want to try and get 40-60 fps on half-life 2, but I don't know what settings are suitable for my pc. I use medium textures, high quality models, reflect all, 2x aa, no af, 1024x768, high shadows and shaders. I have a geforce 6800, amd 2500+, 512 megs of ram. I get 20-50 fps on half-life 2, which sucks. I get 20 mostly on the big levels (which there are lots of!).

so..help? :p

thanks alot, einstein. I never knew that! but if you actully read the topic title, it's "what are the best settings for me?" not "why is my videocard not running well?".

The problem is it's *very* dependant upon your setup so this question is ultimately impossible to answer exactly. Turning down the shaders may help tho ...

it's true...

Anyway, I think you should turn down the aa setting to none, and maybe reduce the shadows to low and/or reduce the water to basic reflections.

I would reccomend 1280x1024 with everything on high and 4X AF and Vsync disabled. Thats what I run on and I have the same system (although overclocked) but with a 6600GT and get about 60FPS or so average. Since your GPU is faster you should get about the same but a bit more FPS. Also do you have a plain (vanilla) 6800 or a GT or ultra? Also you are being CPU limited but that means you should be able to crank up the setting with no effect on your FPS.

well accutlly my point was that there is no point of the 6800 in ur system if u cant have everything on high quality and its a powerful card not meant for slow cpus

HL2 will anylise your pc and put stars next to the setting that are best for you.

This would be good to try. I don't think there is that much difference between medium and high shader quality. Also try the next one down instead of reflect all.

Look at my specs in sig. I get perfect framerate (40) with almost exact setings.
So it's not your processor, beacuse mine can handle it. Make sure you have latest drivers...and follw this guide to get the best performance outta ur comp for HL2. http://www.tweakguides.com/HL2_1.html
That guide can work miracles.

Try the settings up higher, in your case that might actually improve FPS.

what is pc1066 rdram never heard of it
It's an obscure modle of ram that never caught on for its hefty price tag and now limited avaliability. It's only on intel 850 chipsests. I highly don't reccomend it.
But it's still pretty fast, around DDR DRAM PC2700 / 3200 speeds
