Best settings to get less lag in HL2DM?

I played it a couple of times, great game! Yet I am on a cable connection, i have pings below 50 when i see the server in th elist, when i join it, it could rais up to 200. I always played any Valve game with good pings , but as soon as HL2DM launches, i see it can get choppy and whatever.

Did anybody had some good settings (for 'rate', etc) to prevent most of this? I think my rate is now 10.000 (default)... but then again, i lack knowledge on this part.

A tip that I have done to be found extremely useful and satisfactory, and it may help you greatly too.

Ctrl+Alt+Del
->Processes
->Right Click on Steam.exe
->Set Priority
->Low
->Yes

you think i am a moron or something? Get a job or do something usefull. Don't waste my time with this crap.

I find it odd to say i am rude when someone makes fun off me when i ask a normal question. But nevermind. (i saw my reaction again, ok, its a bit rude, my apologies for that)

I tried several rate settings, but i feel like playing with a toy and i don't know what actually changes. The point is that it also relies on the server. I know there are people who have way more knowledge on the client/server field for optimal settings to have minimum lag. All i want to know if someone could help me with better rate settings or even some other stuff to get a smoother play. Its very strange even my cable connection is uber fast (300 k/sec)...

What, how was he making fun of you? Reducing the priority of the Steam process may well have a significant impact on the performance of the game. Not all advice beginning with "ctrl+alt+del" is noob tricking.

yeah, seriously.

Now, if he has said, "Press f10 to minimize..." then that would be justified.

Afaik setting the process piority on LOW would give less CPU power (ticks) to the steam.exe file. Afaik the steam.exe runs together with the hl2.exe file to make this all happen , so it would increase lagging (because the processing time takes longer). Or it could case instabilities due hl2.exe running at a higher speed.

Perhaps i am wrong, i thought i was beeing fooled around. I can see the logic in reducing priorities of steam.exe, and perhaps it was in good intention.

I thought i was being fooled,
I thought wrong,

what more do i have to say? I already offer my apologies if i was offending to someone. I won't come up with excuses like "i do not have my day, i have a headacke, and i am pissed so sorry for reacting like that".. simply because that aint true. :)

No, it's cool, no worries.

Would you like my autoexec config? It's pretty good on cutting out lag.

yeah sure! could you e-mail that to me? ;) thx a bunch!

ok, i promise when the bot plugin works, i will send it to the hl2.net staff first... if interested :P :)

Well, when I first heard the same thing from a fellow CS: S player I thought he was jerking me around, too. I was at my last straw with trying to find a solution to my high ping problem. So I tried it. I couldn't believe it! I was damn happy. I'm not saying that it would solve your problem entirely, but it is worth a shot. Trust me, it will not **** up your PC. :)

I'll post it up here most likely. Gonna remove my weapon binds/alias stuff :)

ok thx! :)

if it really works, i will consider trying it anyway, if it can't harm a thing why not ? :)

actually I used to lag so much that it was unplayerable. Then someone told me to reduce the priority of the process hl2.exe to low , which didnt sound logical to me , but anyway I tried it. Now whenever I do that and type cl_smooth 0 in console , I get an extremely good ping (around 20) and havent lagged for days now. Not even a little stuttering.
The only thing that still bugs me is that I have 50 mb bandwidth traffic from playing HL2 DM for an hour (35 mb download and 15 upload), which is quite annoying if you have a monthly bandwidth limit.

Badger! you're giving out your 1337 configs now!?! what about the 1337! the 1337!!!!

Alright Comrade, I'm a bit of a noob in this aspect, but my lag can be unbearable at times. Where is the autoexec file for this, and do I just simply cut and paste this into it? A little nudge in the right direction would be much appreciated.

BTW do these setting help in HL singleplayer as well?

Yeah, my settings turn down the more extreme graphics for multiplayer.

Right, in your steamapps directory, go to the folder titled hl2mp and the folder cfg, then create a new txt file and name it autoexec.cfg. Then open it with notepad, and paste all my settings in :)

That's not all my config ;) just optimized settings :)

I've tried out your config because i had similar problems with my lag too...
but after i logged into a server i discovered a serious bug...
after using your config i can now "speed hack" and jump to extreme heights....
people started blaming me for cheating...
your config was the only change that i made... i played a few min before that change in the same server and everything was fine...

I hv 56k im gonna try this also see if it lowers my lag but sadly i doubt amything can help me lol except maybe spending another 20$ a month :cheers:

l33t-Thats wron it alwasy 1337 btw play it windowed mode it help me when I was getting lag online.

Tuning down gfx does not really help you if you got lag (i.e. network related) probs.

Actually the secure way to avoid lag is:

1. Set
rate = 10000
cl_cmdrate = 20
cl_updaterate = 20

2. If you still encounter lag REDUCE the above settings in steps of 500 for rate and 2 for cmdrate, updaterate. A way to measure this more precisely is to issue the net_graph 2 console command. Adjust the above values so that you have CHOKE 0 LOSS 0.

3. If you have a very good connection, increase rate SLOWLY to a max of 20000 and cmdrate / updaterate SLOWLY to about 40 ...50. More will not help you much. Check against the CHOKE and LOSS values in the net_graph.

4. If you have CHOKE and LOSS = 0 and still experience lag, tuning down gfx effects (s.a.) or better buying a new gfx card might solve your problem (which I would not call lag then since this refers to conncection probls mostly).

5. If you have found your settings, copy them to your autoexec.cfg file.

good luck... and see you fraggin (btw. badger where r u playing, have not encountered enough challenges yet :) )

It is net_graph 3 actually... :cheers:
