Hey guys, I just picked up X2 the threat but it's going back tomorrow as it's not what i'm looking for. I'm after something to show off my new rig and to be full of spacey action. Any ideas? In the ATI trailer

http://www.ati.com/gitg/downloads/trailers/index.html

there are a few snippets of what looks to be an amazing space shooter - any ideas what that is?

thnx :upstare:

It's not really a graphical showstopper, but it still looks good today... plus it has the best gameplay and story out of any space shooter-

I am of course talking about the Freespace series. Freespace 2 ups the graphics from 1, but they're still both top class games.

excellent, thanks. No idea what the space vid shown in the ati trailer is tho? or how i could work out what it is?

cheers

No idea, there's only about 2 seconds of footage and it's not even in-game.

freespace 2 is the best ive played recently(if three years ago can be called recent)...

but its not anywhere close to the X2 in the gfx department.

as far as the game in that trailer....it doesnt look like anything ive seen........most likley its just a cutscene from a game.

Yeah... Freespace 1 & 2 are awesome. I really liked both. For those of you that have played the 2nd and beaten it...

*****SPOILERS!!!!!******

Did you die or live at the end? I only got a chance to play it once then my friend took it back (I had borrowed it from him). I died at the end and they talked nicely of me like "He stayed behind fighting to ensure that as many people escaped as possible" or something like that... I was wondering it you could just head for the exit right away or if you pretty much have to stay behind.

*****END SPOILERS*****

There should be a font that is the same color as the background for this forum so we don't have to leave huge spaces for spoilers...people who wanna see 'em can just highlight them...that'd be easier.

well i thought that footage smacked of fmv but it is shown exactly at the point where the weird lookin guy (white shirt - probably someone really famous at ati??) says 'we have brought to the pc industry what has been described as the holy grail - cinematic rendering' - i assumed this meant that those images were realtime?

No, you can't make it to the warp gate in time if you're fighting to save the convoy. You just die a true hero!

**SPOILER**

The "snippets" are taken from an FMV sequence of the game Freelancer .

As for the ending of FS2: (Highlight).

You can get away from the blast. Hell you can just wait the entire time in the jump node, then just jump out as soon as the shockwave starts. You really don't have to save anybody's ass but your own, but I guess that's not very nice ;) .

Freelancer is pretty good actually, nice story... And its VERY pretty with high AF/AA and its fast too. A bit crummy on the gameplay balance though, I always used "old" ships and weapons without any problems. And the freelancing part is quite short, you get like 1 main story mission, one 10 minutes freelancing mission, another main story mission, then another 10 minutes freelancing... They could have made it so it took 10 missions between (you can choose not to do the main quest until later, but it kind of takes away the feel when you hear "Yeah, we got to do this thing in another sector, we'll be in touch" and minutes later "Hey I'm back, need to talk to you".

Anyway, the best game is... TIE FIGHTER (collectors edition)!!! W00T!!! SOFTWARE ACCELERATED GOURAD SHADING ROCKZZZZZZ!!!!!!

X-Wing vs tie fighter was really cool... great fun flying in to attact some massive star fighter :D

Bah!!! X-wing vs tie fighter... Childsplay! I'm talking the *one and only* Tie Fighter game. Its really one of the greatest sims ever. If you can ever say a game is "perfect", that's would be Tie Fighter.

I installed Freelancer again a couple of days ago and I had a lot of fun with it. The storyline is quite scripted and the freelancing part isn't very fancy, but its nice nonetheless. If you can get it for less than the regular price, get it.

I liked Tie Fighter was the only SW game I owned and only one needed it so rocked lol.

Sorry FortisVir I have to disagree no hard feelings.

I also own FL and did a pause on the trailor those ships I have never seen in FL before and closest match I can come up with is B5. And I paused the trailor to actually study them and cannot confirm what they are. Plus the trailor did not keep to just game footage it showed that car so maybe could have been something from a movie ?

Another guess is it may be from Eva the online space game.

Screw Tie Fighter! Star Wars for Atari is the best flight-sim evar!!!

hmm i'm suprised we can't actually pinpoint the footage from the vid but i'm glad to see i'm in good company with regards to xwing vs. tiefighter and tiefighter itself. amazing games and in fact one of the first i ever played on a pc!

Tie Fighter... I played that on a friend's computer... and then spent two years searching for a copy...

Pff... I would upload it if I had the space (since I got the CE, it contains alot of voices and is pretty big. I think it was a while ago I played it, its on a CD at least :))

the wing commander series are also alot of fun.
Yeah, but that was fighting for good and glory against the cat people... In Tie Fighter you fight for the evil empire, crushing the puny rebellion and their good intentions :)
Wing Commander was very good though. Especially the pre mission bar and bunk area design, somehow you felt part of the crew. Dont remember which game that was in though (I mix them up all together, I know I've played Academy, and a full game, just dont know which lol...)

Ohohoh! Super Wing Commander! That was my first 'real' game, and I remember spending hours playing it on my old Macintosh. Great game, for that time.
If I remember correctly, the way you completed the missions affected the story. For example, if you did very poorly the Tigers Claw would eventually be forced to retreat back into Terran space, closely followed by the cat-people.
Though I don't know how the game ends, seeing as I never actually completed it:(:P

Umm...that footage is from Freelancer. I have the game, I've beat it, I've watched the intro movie probably 20 times, and thats what that footage is from.

*Freelancer intro spoiler*The guns firing on the coalition cruiser are firing onto a moon at an alliance base. The alliance has been pushed back and are making a last stand.

If you still don't believe me, download the intro movie from this link

yep, definately the intro movie from freelancer

wow i just watched the vid. it looks awesome. How much does this game cost and how new is it?

The answer to one question is inversely related to the answer of the other...

thank god i tried the demo of freelancer before i was going to buy it.....

saved me 50$

Cant access any of those, although I have heard of a free Babylon 5 game.

Never could get into the Privateer games, but Particle Systems's Independence War2: Edge of Chaos is superb in all departments. Decent graphics (excellent at the time); magnificent soundtrack; huge universe to explore/raid/pirate your way around; realistic space combat physics and gameplay model. The only check against it would be the difficulty level on certain missions turning/scaring casual flight-sim wannabees away.

Heavy Dreadnaught > Star Destroyer or Enterprise D... (seeing as it can actually hit things that are out of visual range...) ;)

I tried IFH yesterday, and got these strange graphical errors (sort of distortions):(

privateer 2 was insanly buggy...i could never get more than a couple of hours into it before i wanted to break something.
