Best video card that was available for launch of original Half Life?

I had a Matrox <puke>

Then there would have been one or two more between but then I had a TNT2.

The highest level cards you could get at the time were DirectX 6 cards. Go back 3 or 4 generations.

I think Riva TnT came right after HL, but I'm not sure when it came in the US..

The same week HL came out I bought the top of the range gateway machine that was available ... PII 450mhz with Voodoo 2 and STB card (nvidia i think) in SLI.

I still play HL now (www.hlccl.com for our DM league) but if I was still playing on that machine I would have given up a long time ago...... single figure frame rates were seen on some maps with high Z values and lots of action.

My 2 main machines now are P4 2.4ghz GF3 and XP2200 GF4 ... one of which will be upgraded to latest spec the week HL2 comes out :)

Imo it will be a few years time before the kit is available to get the most out of HL2 ...... certainly in multiplayer mode .... thats what we saw with HL and I dont see it being any different with HL2.

100fps is what people strive for now in HL which is what I get with my XP2200 and GF4 .... whatever the max FPS for multiplayer gaming is in HL2 it will be a few years yet before the kit is available to achieve it.. imo.

Voodoo Banshee 16Mbram! I LOVED THAT MONSTER!!!

ah, yes, the days when we weren't so spoiled and still thought 30 fps was good.

heh, i first played HL in 400x320 (or something like that).. those squares only got me even more frighened!!:dork:

YAY my Voodoo Banshee 16mb was the best! It ran everything at the time! It was funny too, when I finally upgraded I pulled out the card and it had a huge burn mark going across the big chipset chip! I was like thats why it has been running crappy for the last few months!

i gotmy comp about 4-4 1/2 years ago and im running CS at an almost steady 30fps with a tnt2 32meg (ya i know, im so cool with my 32meg vid card) and a P3 667 mghz

Heh, I used to play CS on a system like that too. Those were the old school days of yore....I actually ran Tribes 2 on a machine like that for several years. :borg:

I was using a Cyrix 233Mhz with a Voodoo II. I later upgraded to an Athlon 500.

I'll always remember that Cyric for the fact whenever I did a double barrel shot the PC would jerk. Ol' good times :)

My full system was:
266Mhz
174 MBRAM
Voodoo Banshee 16MBRAM
34 GB
