It used to be called 'pop' because back in the day, they didn't have 'tabs' or caps on the soda, instead the neck of the bottle was shaped sort of like an 'S' and in the top there was a steel ball, the pressure instead the bottle kept the ball stuck to the top, and when you wanted to open it, you would smack the ball with your hand and it would go "pop!"..
my friend has one of the bottles in his room, it was very informative.
