Better than the HL2 characters? (Part II)

I make this thread, simply because the other one is too long and I want to express my tiny opinion. Please don't flame me for making the discussion upon that moh soldier picture longer.

alright guys, I personally expect that the picture to be real time, not because i'm a mohaa fan( I never played mohaa), but because the fact that this picture is real time prove that the world of gaming keeps making great improvement to entertain players like us. Now, I have a question, do you guys think that modellers could make a face with such a great detail with source engine? I mean look at player or weapon models in hl1 and its mods; some models look more detail than those in the original game hl.

See the example:
agent.jpg

Doesn't he look like the real Agent Smith?!!

The above model looks much better than Gordon in hl1. However both models run on hl engine. I think that modellers who are going to make models for hl2 mods will make models with better detail than those that we are seeing now in the hl2 demo videos.

Im sorry but i really think that moh pic is not ingame
it just looks so much better then any other ingame shots shown

Even if it was in-game, it would lagg :)

That Smith model was converted from UT2k3

I know, but it doesn't matter whether it's converted or not, because it proves that hl engine is able to run such a good model, therefore hl2 engine should be able to run even better model than the G-man we saw in the video. Compare the original cs weapon models with those that we can downlaod from cs-nation, u will see what i'm mean

the only thing i don't like is G-man's teeth, but I think modellers are able to fix it. Valve is reputed to make bad models (see cs, hl models...), even amator make better model than Valve. Modellers like plastic child are able to make some real nice models

G-Man looks just as real... except the inside of the mouth. However G-Man's eyes look even more real (they even blink real). I saw the G-Man using expressions and moving his mouth when he talks, that other thing is a still picture that may be just concept art.

I don't agree at all that it is better then HL2. Nor do I think HL2 characters look bad in any way.

where can I find the SMITH model for hl?

It's a model for The Specialist, I think someone had converted one for Natural Selection. If you want it on hl, u must convert it urself or ask someone to convert it for u.

How do u know its real time, it doesn't look real time to me becuase of the back ground, and im prolly right, but with the HL1 models the vavle only made them that way becuase of the polys and such and they probably cbstuffed, and with hl2 and the models i dont care. just gimme ragdoll affects and im happy:D (AND NO GIBBING! its cheap)
i need to lay down.

Yeah I just think it's a render. (look at the self shadowing it's years ahead of doom 3 and that is ment to have superior lighting and shadows)

When I see a movie of that MOH soldier I will beleive it... But *BETTER* is different for everyone. I for one like non realistic characters. G-Man is perfectly done...

Don't worry gamevoodo, there are always the people who make the models even better.
when HL2 gets released, I'm sure you'll like the g-man model as it is, and if you don't, someone will make it even better.

u're right, u get my point, that's what i'm saying. I mean with source engine modellers are able to make great models, maybe even better than the soldier in that picture. So don't mind in comparing models from other game with those in hl2. certainly i can't wait to see hl2, but I anticipate even more the mods that come after it.

The Agent Smith picture is just more detailed, not better graphics! You can still compare him with Freeman and see it's the same engine. The MOH pic is MUCH better than the other pictures of the game.

The Quake 3 engine which MOH uses has never, and will never be able to get in game graphics as good as that soldier.

All the models seen so far by Valve for HL2 are brilliant.

The first time you saw the HL1 models I thought they were brilliant, but inevitably people brought out better ones.

Yeah, thats a render, not an in-game pic.

And its not impossible to make graphics of games similar to CG we see in pre-rendered movies or in movies. Its the hardware capabilities out there that makes it not possible right now.

the original hl models were not as high detail because of target system requirements at the time. as technology advanced, the community created higher poly models.

i don't believe the unprofessional part of the mod community has the ability to make anything near the quality of hl2. it's simply a whole new level of detail. i do expect some amazing ideas from the mod community, but i don't think for the most part they will release quality art.

as for the moaa picture, it looks okay, but the eyes are very fake and the face is pretty low poly. his chin is even pointy.

How is everybody mentioning Gordon when you can't see Gordons face in Hl2?

dude! C&C cutscenes are awesome! Kane could whup all y'all!!!

It's worth noting that most of the mods out were designed some time after HL1 was initially released. The system reqs. of HL were originally a p166 and a 4 meg card (no, wait, i think it supported software mode). Let's see how many people play CS on a 500mhz without trouble (and it's graphics aint so hot. one infamous fpsucker smoke granade and not much else).

I think it's inevitable that some of the mod content coming out will be superiour in quality to HL2. but the quantity and consisstancy over a full length game should show the talents of the HL2 artists. In addition, many mods are extensively refined after their release. Since they are often released in a beta or even alpha stage, i guess that doesn't mean an awful lot.

I disagree; I think you will find some of the mod community are pretty talented. Yes many wont match up to the quality of HL2, but some will.

I bought a graphics tablet a few weeks back so I could polish up on my artistic skills with the idea of maybe doing an HL2 Mod. Now the image is 2D done in Photoshop and nothing to do with a mod, but it gives you an idea of the abilities of a non professional.

Yeah, some will be great. Compare the models in DoD with HL, they are as good as they can be, and better than the original.

You are very talented. Did you use any sort of reference picture at all?

Chris_D's absolutely right - excellent picture there Lex Talionis, well done!

Lex, do you hang out at conceptart.org? I highly recommend you visit there, if you haven't already. Especially their forums area, lots of awesome artists - many who work in the gaming industry (a guy named Sparth is particularly talented, and has worked on many games as well as now).
What type of tablet did you buy? And what program are you using? I have Painter 8 at the moment, and need to buy a tablet. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the source engine could do something like that but I dont see any game doing it until most PCs can run it.
(Also the new MOH game doesn't look that pretty :p, One is being made with a new team on Unreal Warfare and the members of the original team who broke away are doing another Q3 engine thing I think)

All right, we can compare that picture to HL2 characters, but to be fair we would have to compare it to this !

Sorry, but HL2 renders are far more impressive.

Heck if they had that kind of self-shadowing in MOH, John Carmarck might as well quit his job right now.

Thanks; yes I used several references for the eyes, hair and skin tones. I have Painter but haven't used it yet, just been messing around in Photoshop. I got a Wacom Intuos A5 (6x8) Platinum tablet, it’s a joy to use compared to a mouse. Thanks for the tip about ConceptArt.org, some really great artwork, very inspiring.

... Anyway back to the topic

That pic is not in-game, it's way too high-quality. That MOH game is not on the Quake III engine either, it's a new engine.

just so you knows... buying a tablet does not give you magic skillz. i've had one for a while, and i cant make sssshhhtuff like Lex here can. doesn't help i hardly ever practise.

anyway. don't get one unless you're serious and/or rich (enuf so that it's not denting anything). but if you are... snap one up! they're awesome!

Sweet pic lex. let's see your work with texturing though. :naughty: j/k im sure it's awesome too.

Guys, obviously DoD is going to have better quality models than HL, I mean it came out 3 years later! This in no way reflects VALVe, but just video games in general looking better. Use some freaking common sense!

And BTW, that was one NICE pic, Lex. And I recommend you visit Renderosity, that place is REALLY popular with digital artists (I dabble in Bryce 5).

That DoD thing was about how talented some of the modders are. They made it better than VALVe did, in the same engine.
But you can still see that it's the same engine if you compare DoD with HL. If you compare the two MOH pic though, you can see that they are not the same engine (at least not the same build)
