I have to pick a new graphics card, and i'm wondering wich one is better out of a Gainward Geforce 6800GS and a Sapphire Radeon X800XL. Both are 256 mb and have only a slight price difference.

The 6800 supports HDTV, wich i will not need. The biggest difference is probably that the Radeon card supports OpenGL 2.0 and DirectX 9.0. And the Geforce card supports OpenGL 1.5 and DirectX 9.0c. Wich one should i pick?

Well, i'll need it for everything high-end. It's not like i'm going to be playing chess on the computer. HL2, Battlefield 2, Call of duty 2, Spliter Cell 3, Doom 3, everything that looks good. Will it matter?

And also, will a 400 watt power supply be enough to power the card?

I googled a couple benchmarks and I'd go with the 6800gs

Why would you go for the Geforce?

And there are 3 Geforce 6800's. XFX, Gainward, and Nvidia. Are XFX and Gainward just shitty ripoffs?

well u can have a DX 9 card with very little pipelines & low clock frequency which means very crap performance in games. Or a DX9 card with high pipes & clock frequency = great gaming performance.

No they are all different, I like the XFX as they generally make their cards with higher memory frequency.

XFX and Gainward are manufacturers.

Thanks. I guess i'll go with the XFX XXX edition, since it has a better clock frequency. I saw some benchmarks aswell that compared the two (X800 & 6800), and the X800 won when it came to Source. It was aslo not bad with high AA and stuff, but the 6800 seems to be alot better at higher resolutions.

One more thing though. Will i be able to play with HDR with the 6800GS? (It only has OpenGL 1.5)

You mentioned that 6800 supports HDTV, this probably means that it will support HD-DVD when that comes out, so that means that you are future proof...

On the other hand the Radeon supports OpenGL2.0. There are Rumours (emphasise on Rumour) that OpenGL will be capped lower than it should be on Windows Vista if you decided the upgrade

Overall the contenter is 6800
