Better water reflection and alpha map problems

I've tried out various water textures but can't seem to find one that reflects stuff fully even if its a long way away like in the map in HL2 SP with the big crane magnet.

The lake in that map reflects amazingly and I really want that kind of water for the map I'm making, also My cliffs use an alpha map of sand/rock and it looks fine in hammer but when I go into game it just has complete rock and no sand in the texture.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

for the alpha maps, i believe I read that the scene needs to be properly lighted before they show up properly ingame

and you need to put a 'env_cubemap' entity above the water then in game bring down console and type 'buildcubemaps'
 
env_cubemaps on water are only used for fallbacks for DX8 or DX7 hardware.
