Well, we are aiming at the kind of PC that we think will be mainstream in 2006. We will also be able to scale it down. Basically DirectX 9 cards will be minimum spec, so any DirectX 9 shipping today will be capable of running our game, but probably at reduced detail. If you only have a 256 meg video card you will be running the game one step down, whereas if you have a video card with a gig of memory then you'll be able to see the game at full detail.

A graphics card with a gig of memory!1!1one!!!1  i wonder how much that card will cost you in two years.

I wish people would stop comparing Unreal 3 to HL2 and Doom 3. It's not the same generation of engine, thus there is not justification for comparison.

i am so happy. that screenshot is making me cry.

id love a game that looked like crap if it had completely realistic physics.
so much potential to do crazy stuff with insanely real physics.

fair enough, but if it looked like crap, umm, i think you would be the only one to buy it :p.

the point is, it doesnt have to look great.. just 100% real physics would be fun

Carmack is der ubercodingmonkey; I'd love to see what he does in response to Unreal 3. Not to belittle their work, but I always found Unreal-based games to have a certain graphical quality that I can't quite put my finger on...

It looks damn neat.... but saying it doesnt own other engines. The only reason it looks better than say.... doom3 is because unlike doom 3 unreal 3 doesnt have to worry about running under todays hardware. I bet doom 3 engine will look just like this by 2006... because hardware will be out that can run it. Think about it.....

The minimum video card required to play this engine is just now coming out. What would have to be scaled down on the engine to make it playable on todays hardware? First the shadow softening would have to be taken out. It is too much to blur the shadow edges for todays hardware. Second the polycount would have to be cut in half. Then the texture resolution would have to be lowered alot. Then little effects like HDRI would have to be taken out. In the end what you are left with is the doom 3 engine.

I bet quake 4 will look this good because it is being developed for much higher system requirements than doom 3, like unreal 3 is. Everything that unreal 3 engine does doom 3 engine will be able to do in 2006 because doom 3 engine wont have to be scaled back like it is now. unreal 3 engine looks fantastic but it isnt special because other engines will do that in 2006... thats all im trying to say....

SWEET JESUS ALMIGHTY!

If you could combine HL2's source engine with the unreal 3 engine...you would have the Perfect game engine.

Wow, the future of gaming looks... extreamly highpoly

Yeah, saw the video a while back. Interview impressed me somewhat, breaking joints for example. 'Course, in less than fifteen years I'd bet most games are photorealistic reality simulators (and thus near indentical).

Anyway, what's with quoting pictures these days?! Makes laggy Jesus cry...

by 2006 i bet these gfx wont even be all that

That's what I'm thinking. By the time any game on this engine comes out, It will only be a couple steps above other 2006 games (or maybe no steps at all).
