Ok, I just installed BF2 for the first time a few minutes ago, rebooted my comp, and started up the game. It asked me to create an account, which I did. However, when I clicked the Create Account Button, a popup appeared saying something about connecting to server or something. So I waited for 10 minutes, but nothing happened. Suspecting my comp had hung, I quit the game through Ctrl-Alt-Del and started it again.

My account was listed under Manage Accounts, so I figured it had been successfully created. However, when I try and log in a popup saying "Connecting to Account Server" came up and my PC hung AGAIN. The same thing happened the second time I tried. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Are you by chance using a firewall?

I'd reccomend you shut it down before playing. I shut down my firewall when playing and then bring it back up when i'm done.

Ummm I started the patch 5 minutes ago and its still running, is it meant to take that long?

Yes, the patch took at least 10 minutes for me. I walked away and watched TV for a bit.

I remember when I first started doing that stuff, it took a long while. Can't remember HOW long, but it was a while.

the patch took 1 hour 35 mins for me... so you MIGHT have to wait a while!

Nope, no firewall.

Ok, what I need you to do is turn of your computer, and go away.

Don't come back till you have a firewall.

Those things have saved me so much grief.

And that says someone who turns off his firewall everytime he plays :) You think hackers/trojan users etc. will leave you away when you play?

the patch takes awhile to install. It has to unpack a big file. Even though it was only 1.9gb I needed at least 2.5gb to install the patch. I kept getting errors before i figured that out. Patience, patience.

If your pc's took a long time to install it, you guys need to start fixing them, took me 1-2 minutes to install.

No.

That's why i'm extremely anal about my pc. I run spyware and virus checks three or four times a week.

Is it bad that I do it everyday?

I would say yes.

Because...

head on over to www.tweakguides.com and check out the regular maintenence procedures.

Now every time I do some sort of major file altering action, such as a virus scan or program installation/uninstallation, I go through the regular maintenence procedure.

Reason being that after doing something like a virus scan, you get a MAJOR dip in performance. The regular maintenence procedure will bring you right back up though.

Unfortunately, the entire set of actions coupled with the virus scan takes about an hour+, so doing it daily is NOT something i'd consider.

Proof of the performance dip. I reinstalled a small, maybe 26k NIC driver since windows wouldn't recogize it, and figured that the 26k and the registry changes wouldn't be anything major. So I went through a 3Dmark05 run to test the new beta gpu drivers I had installed a day or two ago (went through the maintenence procedure after it) and in the first scene of "Return to Proxycon", where all the soldiers are lined up in the dropship, I saw that my fps was averaging about 24 or so. Now I usaually get 30+ in this scene, and figured that it had to be the NIC driver I had just installed.

Went though the maintenence procedures, and scored 4953, an insignificant 5 point drop that could have just been a crap shot, since I almost always see some variation in scores everytime I run it, even if it's with the same driver package.

Ok Its fixed apparently i was clicking on the wrong desktop shortcut. ("Play BF2 Online Now" instead of "Battlefield 2"). :P
