What do you guys think about the Half-Life 2 soundtracks?

I think it fits the various atmospheres very well, but it isn't exceptional.

CP Violation kicks ass, though. :afro:

CP violation truly kix ass...and even i don't generally like trance the "apprehension and evasion" on is good.
And "combine harvester" is EEEEVVVILLL!!

Oh and BGM stands for BackGround Music.

Ps: LG orbifold is good too...what does it mean anyway? In kleiners lab before you see Alyx teleported away Kleiner says something about "LG ORBIFOLD".

I love the music, if fits so well........ I am probably the only one who thinks this, but HL2's atmosphere and music is mildly depressing

oh, well I am glad to know that I'm just not thinking that. It's the only game that makes me feel sympathy for the characters in it

one of my favorite tracks is when you exit the mineshaft from ravenholm

The music is supposed to be depressing to show the pathetic state the humans are in...how they are being slaughtered and the lies of "a better life".

And zombieturtle, do you have the name of the track?

oh no, all the tracks are just numbers I am pretty sure. You can extract them from the game though..

know what else is kind of depressing, if it is indeed true that the rebels "bought" you from g-man, that basically means all your "friends" in the game like kliener, alyx, barney, eli, rebels are all just using you, that kinda sucks.

Are you hinting at what dr.Breen points out in the end?
"Did you know your contract was open for the highest bidder" or something?

Edit: every track has a name. Even the HL1 ones did.
PS: i don't think Alyx would betray Gordon. By the stuff i've seen she is in love...?

The end of Ravenholm one is called Particle Ghost.

One of my favourites is the bridge music, so calm and soothing. I think it's Lab Practicum.

I always did wonder, though, why is the Highway 17 music played at Sandtraps? I have a feeling that Sandtraps is one loading zone too long, it should start at the lighthouse, not just another part of Highway 17.

Dunno about that, but about the music. I think Particle Ghost does sound like a mix of ravenholm and the combine.

And i really don't think the bridge music is Lap Practicum. It only lasts for 4 secs. It's gotta be something else.
I think it was Suppression Field.

And where have i heard Your Not Supposed To Be Here before?

sry for DP...

"Requiem for Ravenholm" is just darn creepy.
Ditto for "Particle Ghost".

Anyway - here's my take on the music in general.
A lot of the songs are atmospheric, such as the aforementioned "Particle Ghost". While still effective in-game, they are not epic like a movie soundtrack is. There are some cool non-atmospherics also, such as "CP Violation".

well also because when you first meet Barney and he contacts Kliener on the computer he is like "We got no warning that he was going to arrive", so it kind of implies that they were making some negotiation to have Gordon arrive. Alyx seems like the only one generally concerned for the well being of Gordon, all the rest are just kinda like "Gordon, save our asses, we dont care how"

p.s- theres a track that plays after dog jumps on that dropship when you enter your first city building, it sounds like an old record playing, there's some talking in it you cant make out, very creepy sounding.

Yeah - this one. Wow... I remember playing HL2 for the first time. This song really made the game feel real to me, for some reason... the creepy song... the bridge shaking as a train rides over it... whoa. O_O

AND "Apprehension and Evasion".

As for the bridge...that part of the game felt so...empty...with the music and all making the feeling deeper...i always get this feeling while playing games that have a superb and epic storyline and then there are some levels that just disturb you in a weird way...not that "its so sick" way...something else...you just feel empty and like a zombie while you play.:|

"Tracking Device" is also a pretty cool dance music style song.
I liked the bridge music, because it sort of made you reflect on the game, and made for a brief pause during the action.

yeah, that part makes it feel epic, and the part when you go down the elivator in the citadel after you get your Physics Gun back from Breen and that music plays, it just has this "it's time for serious buisness" attitude

Valve really knows when to play the music right.:p

To Destron-"tracking device"...um is it the one that was used in the HL1 credits? It sounds like a remix.

all in the gcf files in the sounds folder. my two favourites are the track after exiting the mines and a track called "citadel ambience"

oh, and your thread seemed to be the type that would get a "pointless" or a been there done that thing, but i must say, youre one lucky guy..

I think it was Suppression Field.

I'm looking right now and it's 2 minutes and 52 seconds. None of the songs are 4 seconds, though some are really short, like Hunter Down (after you destroy the chopper you hear it).

Suppression Field is 1 minute and 1 second, and it's not heard near the bridge at all. It's actually at the last part of Route Kanal, just before you encounter the first radioactive goo.

Traige at Dawn, potmonkeys.

It sounds anime...

And zombieturtle:i don't have any track like that...must be a bonus track...:dozey:

Soulslicer: There is no "citadel ambiance"? It has another name if there is.
And what do you mean about that "pointless" thing?

The end of Ravenholm, being the daylight train track one?

Yes, after going through the mines.
The place itself was confusing. At first you see a light and you think
"OH n?ez!! ITs OV3R! No more daaknez 4 me!!" and when you get to the end of the tunnel the light fades away to reveal a railroad still infested with zombies.
The only good thing about that was that it wasn't dark anymore...:hmph:

Extract them, or buy the cd or whatever you can think of...even download em from the internet.:rolling:

Speaking of extracting... where are the games sound folders??...id like to use some of those weapon sounds.

Traige at Dawn, CP Violation and that one from EP1 that I don't remember the name of.

I love the soundtrack. In most areas its essential for the atmosphere. Go Kelly Bailey!

They're all in there too.

root\hl2\sound\weapons

where do you get the tracks from in your hl2 folder?

steam\steamapps\sourcesounds\hl2\sound\music

All the sound files can be found in:

steam\steamapps\sourcesounds\hl2\sound

Episode One sound files are in:

steam\steamapps\episode1shared\episodic\sound

To extract all these, you will need GFScape, a program that can be downloaded for free.
