Bible isn't the truth? :O

"They say the Church must offer the gospel in ways “appropriate to changing times, intelligible and attractive to our contemporaries”.

The Bible is true in passages relating to human salvation, they say, but continue: “We should not expect total accuracy from the Bible in other, secular matters.”

seems like they're backtracking in order to accomodate ID

Well of course. There were lying bastards back then who deliberately...... things were misinterpreted, yada.

Well, we have HL2 and Source Engine, who needs Bible, faith, church or anything? :P

In reality most real students of the Bible, and certainly the majority of the Church clergy has never really taken the Bible as literally as some people do. They see the value it has beyond being an exact record of events.

Got a good point there, they see it as more of a spiritual thing than historic

but they pick and choose what they want to believe .....which parts of the bible are supposed to be taken with a grain of salt? I'm sure they wont change their minds about the various sections that says homosexuality is a sin ...seems like they're opening the bible to be discredited all together as a factual book

Yeah, I heard about this on the news but I couldn't find a source online.

“We should not expect to find in Scripture full scientific accuracy or complete historical precision,”

No shit, Sherlock.

They're just trying to change the Bible into what they want it to be. Evil currupt bastards.

Ain't nothing new really...they've been doing this since the bible was first created.

So yea...nothing new.

2 weeks ago as i was walking back to my dorm, there were these two girls behind me talking about something. I wasn't paying attention because i didn't really care but then girl #1 expressed her disbelief in what girl #2 said. Girl #2 then said, "yea, it was in the bible" and girl #1 said, "oh then i believe it"

I really dislike the way people on this forum paint all Christians as morons.

ehh dude, you have a pankake on your bunny's head.. is scares me!

"The Bible is undeniable truth! Except for this part and this part and this part. That bit there is a bit dodgy as well, so we'll leave that open to interpetation. As for everything else, it's true! Well, sorta. And this part has kinda been dropped over the years. And that part right there is a bit relative. But these other things are God's law!"

*Sigh* I will never understand organized religion's cherry-picking of religious texts.

Don't feel bad AL. :( Don't listen to those bad men.

No, seriously, most of you twats (not you, Tr0n <3) are closeminded ****s. You complain non-stop about Christianity being full of shit, just because the people believe in God, and saying they're intolerant. Guess what? You people are just as bad. You're all intolerant of people who feel the need to believe in a higher power. You consistently stereotype ALL people with religious views as backwards morons.

I don't know why I bother coming here anymore.

-Angry Lawyer

Yea, they are. Seems like bearly anyone listened to what I said a while back ago about what you believe in and stuff. I should re-post it here.

They're not going to listen. Notice how the majority of people don't respond to posts that are trying to find a balance. People just skip them, and look for something to flame.
God, you're (almost) all pillocks, and I hate (almost) every single one of you.

-Angry Lawyer

you truely are living up to your name today :O

That's all fine and dandy, Lawyer. But since when was this topic a flame against theists?

It's about the Catholic Church's regard of the Bible.

There's only so much crap I can take before I go over the edge, and today I'm venting.

Absinthe - look at the replies. And to the replies to any thread on religion. There are a lot of open flames on "HUR HUR YUO BELIEVE IN GOD" and bollocks like that, and then the rest are thinly veiled comments. You ALL sit there stereotyping - "All Christians are Creationists", "All Conservatives support the war in Iraq and love Bush, and kill babies", "You're a Liberal, and therefore un-American". Half of the crap in Politics are just quotes from the news that try to justify an opinion and a stereotype of the other side. Why the hell can't you all just grow some balls and learn to try and agree, rather than just refute the other side completely?

-Angry Lawyer

Well, I would be too right about now. Yea I noticed how people tend to skip those who are centrist/balanced/whatever's post. They always tend to attack the other extreme side. Well I guess that's how the world works in a way...

Also again...it's nothing new guys. The vatican has been doing it for a while ya know. Rather or not it's a bad thing is the question. For people who take the bible as literal history then...it matters. For those who take it as allegory (sp?) then it doesn't matter.

It happens. While i do believe in God, i get mildly annoyed when i hear people throw themselves into somebody's statement simply because they told them it was in the bible.

...i don't know...

edit: somebody tell me how i can put a gif in my avatar, because the bunny hops around.

Hasn't that happened, like, 6 times already? Or something?

The bible hasn't been changed; I remember hearing one of our speakers answer a question about that. He told us about how we have thousands of documents, some dating back to within a generation of Christ that they use to check for discrepancies in our current bible.

kage: how do i make my bunny hop! It's a gif, but when i upload it the bunny just sits.

It has. You forget that when a document goes through changes text and sentences change also.

So yes in a sense it has.

not that bible ..the other one

Also there is different versions of the bible that has different text like the king james version, old testament/new testament, etc etc.

yea but for the most part it's all the same message:

Jehovah 'is' my shepherd, I do not lack, 2 In pastures of tender grass He causeth me to lie down, By quiet waters He doth lead me.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Yea, but those little changes can change the world. ;)

Wow I just watched that video...just...wow. ****ing...wow.

is that video for ****ing real? I can't believe those people, did nobody go to school? I may not be able to find Iraq blindfolded, but damn, at least i know it's not Australia.

After watching that video i think america should be next. Put us out of our misery because...i mean damn.

but they pick and choose what they want to believe .....which parts of the bible are supposed to be taken with a grain of salt?
Thats the entire field of Christian theology in a nutshell. Debates of this nature have been going on since before the darn thing was written.

And if Jay Leno and company have proved anything its that if you ask enough people, someone will say something retarded. :D

I was going to post this yesterday but then I realized that the Church has probably done this many times before and it wasn't worth a cheesy theological discussion.
