Hey, I had to reinstall Steam and my games not too long ago (due to a hard drive failure), and since then I've had trouble getting my various source-based games to run. They'll start up, load the menu and everything, but when I try to actually start the game, they freeze up part-way through the "LOADING..." screen. I'm REALLY looking forward to Ep2/Portal/TF2, and I was hoping to get this solved before October 10th.
I'm hoping this is all being caused by the only obvious problem Steam is having with my set up: It doesn't like my video card drivers. I have a GeForce 6600, and I have the latest drivers for it (162.18).... But Steam seems to think I don't. If I run the diagnostic tool it tells me I should get driver version 91.47, from over a year ago. I've tried downloading and installing that driver... And Steam still tells me my drivers are out of date... But the diagnostic tool no longer says I have any problems.
So, for the time being, unless someone knows a more likely solution, my question is simply: Which drivers SHOULD I have for the GeForce 6600 for Steam to be happy?
