My birthday's comming up soon, and I want to get a set of dumbells for my room, so I can start doing a bit more lifting at home.

What kind would you guys recomend? I'd like to stay away from those ones where you just move an allen wrench type thing and it stacks more plates on a bar, as from what i've seen, those don't give a very nice movement range.

I dunno, five pounds up I guess is what i'm looking for, up to fifty perhaps. Something where the weights don't take up a ton of space, so I can maybe slide them into my closet when i'm not using them (or onto the wall of my room, either way).

Any ideas from the liftomatics?

It's been years since I lifted anything heavier than a grocery bag, but I saw these things from BowFlex on TV a while back. They're pretty cool - you dial in the weight and then just that much is on the bar when you pull it out. Quite expensive, though.

Bah, I wouldn't recommend that for you at all. I don't know a whole lot about lifting, but that Bowflex system is far too expensive for a casual beginner.
