A bill in Connecticut's legislature that would remove the statute of limitations on child sexual abuse cases has sparked a fervent response from the state's Roman Catholic bishops, who released a letter to parishioners Saturday imploring them to oppose the measure.

and then they wonder why they're hated. ffs this is just continuation of denial of culpability that they've been doing for decades. I guess the church is more important than the victems it helped abuse for so long

Under the bill's provisions, anyone older than 48 who makes a sex abuse claim against the church would need to join an existing claim filed by someone 48 or younger. Older claimants would need to show substantial proof that they were abused.

"They were worried about frivolous lawsuits and so we made the bar high," Bye said.
So it will cut out needing a younger person to file a false claim so that someone older than 48 can still press charges.

This should be seen as a good thing for everyone, even the church. They obviously wouldn't want people coming forward with false accusations, damaging their reputation.

However, I'm not sure if claims are made against the perpetrator of the crime or the church itself. I think it should be against the abuser, but maybe some file claim against the church itself for turning a blind eye or something?

Anyway, in my opinion, it shouldn't matter how many years have passed. If someone abused a child at any time, they are a damned criminal and should be prosecuted. They certainly shouldn't be left free in the same environment (the church) where they initially abused children, however many years ago it may have been. They could be free to do it again, just because it was a long time ago? Ridiculous.

I dont think they have much a reputation left to protect. didnt think it could be tarnished any further but here we are

"legislation would undermine the mission of the Catholic Church in Connecticut, threatening our parishes, our schools, and our Catholic Charities"the letter says
wow these people are terrible liars...also they seem to have a ton of followers that dont bother questioning them about this so id say their power is still great. though if this was any other organization than religion everyone associated with it would demand the removal of these people..
its sick what they can get away with..
