I was thinking of trying this myself. I was going to re-format my HD, reinstall XP, HL2 & Steam so it was the only software I had installed. I fear it may all be vain though & it's a lot of effort just to try & get 1 game working when everything else runs fine. Glad to hear your problems are sorted though.

I've got a lot of crap on my PC too. I created a separate hardware profile and disabled every unnecessary service or process that was running at startup. Freed up quite a bit of memory but really didn't seem to improve anything....

have u defragmented hard drive . the halflife2 game is really fragmented when u install. i put mine on second hard drive which was new. and then defragmented it. still stutters a bit

its not that much efort to reinstall xp, if you make sure yove got all the programs u need on cd, its easy, i also keep all my favorite web sites on floppy, so i dont have to serch for them....

think it takes me about 2 hours from start to finnish. to instal xp And thats quicker than some peps here, trying to get hl2 to install and setup :D

Reinstalling xp is another hit and miss fix like all the rest. I did it and still have the same issue.

No one should ever have to reformat their hard drive and reinstall their OS to play a game. I'd take the buggy piece of shite back to the store and get my money back before I did that.

Hell Yes!

Seriously... this game is such a waste of time and money. You buy a game to play and enjoy it. Not to test it and come up with 20 different configuration scenarios hoping that you will be able to get it to work. I can't even do anything, the latest patch has rendered it completely unplayable.

We aren't your testing department, Valve.

You don't *have* to reformat to play. It's just that if you aren't happy with the performance of the game, it's one of your options.

There's always a good feeling when I do a complete reinstallation of Windows and I'm sitting there looking at the system all nice and clean, all the right drivers and stuff. :smoking:

Then I start installing stuff again and we just know something is going to start messing with it sooner or later. :hmph:

/Throws hl2 out window!¬

/Holds Pc *there there* it's all over :D

Indeed. you would expect Valve to do that for you wouldn't you. Except ..........

We aren't your testing department, Valve.
........... Aren't we? This is one of the arguments I would level at Steam. Given that it updates automatically & without the player having to search out & install updates his/herself it's now no big deal for a company (Shall we say Valve for arguments sake?) to release code that might contain a few (cough!) hiccups & then have thousands of different permutations sending back information about the best way to overcome these hiccups. This, I fear, Is exactly what is now going on with HL2/Steam. It's had 3 updates already & we're expecting more to sort out other problems with the game ASAP.

As much as I dislike Steam I can see that it has the potential to shape & change the way games are developed & distributed for the PC format. But this change is going to come at a cost. Who bear's the brunt of these costs remains to be seen. A lot of people are saying it stops piracy so it works. Well, Anyone who thinks something this radical is as clear cut as just preventing piracy is a fool. If it take's off it will change everything! for better or worse, The early problems are all to evident for some - It's human nature that we don't like to have things imposed on us. Steam has been imposed on us so it's like it or lump it of you want to play these games! Well, It's obvious that this has alienated some gamers already & given that this draconian system is associated with the most anticipated game of all time means it could very well alienate them from PC gaming all together!
