I was sending some books away (I work in a library :p) and I came across a book on photoshop so I thought I'd have peek in it. It said that if you open a jpeg up more than 5 times it will start to lose quality.....now I think I've come across this rumour before with bitmaps but I always thought it was bullshit.

But....it was in A BOOK! LOLOLOL

Someone dispell/confirm. CHEERS!

I've never heard about this. I know .jpeg is cheaper on HDD resources than .bmp, and this is the reason jpeg is lower quality

It's only when you open it up in an image editor and save it over and over. Use a .png and export them to .jpg or .gif if you're going to edit an image a lot instead of discarding it and starting over.

I could be wrong or they just want you to use their proprietary .psd

Its a misconception that originated from a typo that meant to say that if you continuously open up and save the same jpeg image, you will begin seeing quality degredation after about the 5th time.
