Haven't got any source on this yet but I've seen it posted on multiple forums that Blizzard announced at BlizzCon a 1:1 port of DotA over from the Warcraft III engine to the StarCraft II engine. And it will be named Defense of the Ancients aswell. Looks like more competition for Valve, even on the name itself.

Edit: Some info: http://www.sc2mapster.com/announcements/map-editor-panel-blizzard-dota/

Smart move. Valve is up against the big boys now.

I think Valve's version will be a lot better simply because it will be a standalone game as opposed to a custom map. One pretty big problem I see aswell is the built-in delay that StarCraft II has with units which will probably make it a pain to micro a single hero unit all the time. Also Valve has a whole team dedicated to DotA 2 and they have the developer of DotA with them. But I like having a lot of options so I welcome this.

When was Valve not up against the big boys? When they made an FPS or when they made a team online FPS? Do only small boys make those anymore?

With DOTA I mean. Before today Valve was competing with two start-up companies (HoN and LoL). Now Blizz joined the fray. I'd say that is a big boy compared to the other two.

Yawn. Only one company has had the balls to start a new game. Hmm...

Wasn't this announced even before SC2 release? I guess this news is that they are about to release it?

Are you thinking of fan-made ports? Because I don't think Blizzard has announced it before today that they're making a port.

I hope Valve blasts the shit out of Blizzard in every way when their version of DOTA comes out. Blizzard has turned into a slimy piece of shit while Valve only continues to increase in it's wuv for you.

Blizzard wuvs your money.
Valve wuvs YOU and your money.

As far as I'm concerned, Blizzard totally dropped the ball with Dota. They could've capitalized on it early and developed it into an even more popular game, but they pretty much ignored it until good competition popped up.

I don't know what the obsession with DoTA is. Sure, it was a good map, not even a mod, but it hardly deserves a standalone game.

When they first started talking about Custom Maps and the Premium System with bnet 2.0, they specifically mentioned "Games like DoTA will not be a premium map" hinting that they would be doing something about it. Since to be a "Premium map", you have to have 100% custom shit....so I assume they were already gearing towards DoTA. Then again, wasn't it obvious? War3 made the damn thing famous.

You uhh... realise it's not their project, right?

I was gonna say, if they WANTED TO, I'm sure they could figure a way to make DoTA theirs.

Just like Counter-Strike was not Valve's project!!!!!!!!

oh wait
It... wasn't.

Are you guys saying DOTA would have been better off with Blizzard's involvement, or Blizzard would have been better off involving themselves with DOTA? In any case I'm not really sure I follow where them "dropping the ball" is coming from, given Valve is a pretty unique case as far as engaging community projects. Blizzard didn't have to become involved with it, and there were probably reasons behind it. For example: having like three projects already in the works at any given time.

He is saying:

If blizzard would have bought the rights to DoTA they wouldn't have any issues. So now they are trying to fight back with their DoTA versions. Meaning they are fighting with the big boys *VALVE*.

Counter-Strike wasn't a Valve game to start with. Just a mod on HL engine. Then valve bought it and the rest is history. he was mentioning Blizzard could have done the same, but didn't, thus here we are.

Why does the internet have to make such useless arguments constantly? Sheesh.

NUH UH, YUH HUH!

Eh, didn't Valve copyright the name? I understand they prob aren't going to interfere with the WC3 free version continuing, but they may not be happy with Blizzard using the name.

Valve have filed trademark for Dota, not Defence of the Ancients and their game is just called Dota. The HoN team filed trademark for Defence of the Ancients. I don't know if anyone has actually been awarded any trademarks yet. For the legality, I'm no lawyer but I doubt Blizzard have any more right to the DotA than Valve does. I really doubt anyone has a claim on it at this stage. Multiple versions were made by loads of people with everyone using the name DotA as they pleased. Isn't there some law regarding copyright that if it goes unenforced then it be comes legally acceptable for anyone to use it?

Blizzard turns up the heat:

Valve is usually so pro mod community. It's such a community company that it just seems like a really strange move to us... I really don't understand why [they would do it], to be honest.

If ID Software had protested the release of Team Fortress Classic years after release of the Quake mod, people would have raised their eyebrows pretty high over it. But whatever. I know development doesn't work on a game by game basis or anything, but if something that steals lame anime character names for unit use so much as delays a texture from the next Half-Life, priorities must be changed.

"Valve is usually so pro mod community."

So, I'm going to assume that all the other mods they've converted into full games have had copyrights filed, so essentially this comment is full of shit.

Besides, I'm sure I read they'd specifically copyrighted "DOTA." Not Defense of the Ancients, and not if it was expressed as "DotA" which still belongs to someone else somehow. Or maybe that source was also full of shit. *shrug*

If Blizzard were as pro-community and pro-mod how come they didn't hire DOTA developers? If they had followed the pattern Valve have used they would have made a DOTA game years ago after hiring the guys making the mod.

Oh dear god. People please learn the history of a company before bashing them for it. So many people claiming Valve only ever hired mod teams that made mods for their own games.
