Blizzard has trademarked the name “Cataclysm,” lighting the Internet afire with speculation surrounding what might become a future Blizzard game.
The name was trademarked for ”computer games, online entertainment services and paper-based products,” giving it the appearance of a new intellectual property from the house of Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo. The Warcraft universe has a collectible card game (a “paper-based product,” presumably) in addition to a board game and novels bearing the StarCraft name.
“Cataclysm” is a name for an event in Warcraft lore when the game world continent of Azeroth was split into several pieces, which may set the stage for a game in that universe (perhaps Warcraft IV or a World of Warcraft expansion).
Blizzard suggested during BlizzCon ‘08 that its unannounced next-gen MMO would be based on new intellectual property, or at the very least would not be a direct sequel to World of Warcraft, shooting down the possibility of “Cataclysm” referring to a new MMO (if it is indeed a reference to the Warcraft universe). Fan site WoW.com noticed a conspicuous changing of hands for the domain name wowcataclysm.com, as the domain was shifted to registrar GoDaddy (which Blizzard uses for all its domains) on the same day as the trademark registration. In effect, it’s a hint that the next expansion for the 14-million-players-strong MMO at least has a name.
“Cataclysm” may be simply a protective trademark for a project that could never see the light of day. Blizzard has shown in years past that it’s unafraid to cancel games, as evidenced by the abandoned titles Warcraft Adventures and StarCraft: Ghost.
My guess it that it is the south seas expansion.
