theres always summink up with my puter, but the current problems are:

speakers / soundcard (both creative) speakers = 5.1 something, not sure of the full make. sc = sblive 1024

when playing music though the sound keeps peaking e.g. i'll have music on at what i dont think is an unreasonable level and it'll be playing merrily away and then all of a sudden it gets really loud and the goes really quiet and repeats it over and over then as suddenly as it started stops. what the hell can cause this?

my other question is i have a 2500+ 512 333mhz ram and stuff that used to run fine 12 months ago now runs like shit (even after multiple formats). a prime example of this is bf1942, which has never loaded fast but now takes an absolute age to load.

Is there a part of a PC that breaks without stopping your computer functioning that could possibly cause this?

One problem at a time. Have you tried a totally different set of speakers?

yep, same thing happened with the old speaker so i got these new ones, which were fine for months (well over a year) and then the same thing happens again.

about your computer being slow, have you run a virus scan and scans for spyware as they can often slow your pc down. other than that try defragging your computer, thats all i can think of.

Hmm. Well it's unlikely that your sound card is causing your speakers to be damaged, or that your speakers have coincidentally had the same defect.

Here are a couple things to try immediately:
- Update your sound drivers (I'm sure you've already done this but it needs to be said just in case)
- Check and see if your sound card is sharing an IRQ.

Sound cards, particularly old ones, can be pretty picky about IRQ's, though when they are, it's not usually the behavior that you're describing, at least from my personal experience.

Now that I think about it, there is one other possibility that might seem likely. The next time you have this problem, quickly get to the back of your computer and jiggle the speaker cable. It's possible that the interface is loose/damaged.

It's the volume controller on the creative soundworks speakers, my old ones did it too. After a while the variable resister in them gets a bit worn, means it sort of adjusts itself without you touching it. Creative are aware of the problem, have redesigned the controller and released a whole new series of speakers.

Reguarding bf1942, if you installed the retail off the CD without patching and loaded a single player it'd probably load quickly, its just got slower and slower with the patches. Mine loads like crap too, i'm guessing everyones does.

I have exactly the same problem and the same hardware.
I think it's basically that the card is too old and now ****s about, I find it doesn't affect it over a certain level, so set your speakers higher than usual and lower the volume in your control panel.

yeah, thats what is probably is, my old speakers were very touchy when trying to change volume and would get very loud and quiet or loud for no apperent reason.

My new (well a few months old) Megaworks speakers remote is getting worn out as well. The buttons used to click but don't anymore, but the volume dosn't change like my old ones.
