My friends and I started playing Risk about three days ago, and we're already reaching a point where it turns into a solved (or at least predictable) game. We need a game that involves a lot more diplomacy and strategic thought into the gameplay.

I've been looking at two games so far, Axis & Allies and Attack!. I used to own Attack for a bit, but I a) never got through more than one round with anyone, and b) loaned it to a friend more than a year ago and said friend has disappeared. From the rulebook and the handful of half-rounds I played, it seemed like a really deep game. Multiple unit types, government types, basic resource management, trade routes, and so forth. But I never got a game going, and I have no idea how it would actually play out to victory.

Also, I've never played Axis & Allies.

What's a full game of either like, and what are some similar games that we could look into?

I love risk with a fiery passion, and have never found a board game I enjoy as much as it

Risk is the best board game on the planet. I do wish it had more complex diplomacy though, I feel like there's so much room to make it even more awesome. I haven't played it but I think the game Diplomacy might be what you're looking for.

PS: I haven't lost a game of Risk in like four or five years, the last 20 games or so :D my friends all hate me

Speaking of which my Dad bought that board game about 2 years ago but never played it. The moment we decided we wanted to play, the instructions went missing :P

Lol, diplomacy with my friends & family usually involves me being raped from behind by an apparent ally :(

Diplomacy with my friends and I usually involves an inter-mutual plan to give each of us two continents, one each in the North and South hemispheres. Then it comes down to a lengthy game of pseudo-attrition before two of us mount an offensive on the third, followed by one of the first two stabbing the other in the back.

Well fine, if none of you are going to answer my questions I'll just make my OWN damn world domination board game!

/me actually goes and reworks the rules

Risk is my favorite board game (in fact the only one I like), but I agree it could be deeper.

Haven't tried it, but I just noticed there is Risk II.

Anyone play that?

I actually have both of them on my laptop. In II there are some more of options that you can turn on and off, like having more places to conquer in order to win etc, etc.

But I liked Risk better for some reason.

I think if you like Risk, Stigmata, you might like some of the more simple turn based strategy games like Advance Wars.

Look up "Junta". You'll have all the diplomacy you ever wanted which makes you want to kill every player (which is a goal).
