Anyone else checkout the closing of their local Borders Bookstore??

their prices off sci-fi were 20% and my discount card still gets an extra 10% (the discount card ends this next friday) off that but I love sci-fi books. Leviathan Wakes was written by George R R Martin's assistant and seems like my next read.

anyway check it out before its too late

I went with my dad to the shopping center where we had our Borders. I hadn't been there in over a year but it was a nice place. Now it was replaced by some random BS.

Went earlier this week and picked up some books for 20% off. Might go back again later when they have real deals.

Talk about some bullshit. The borders store are closing here so they changed their policy on gift vouchers. I got a $30 gift voucher last Christmas, and in order to use it there I have to spend an amount equal to that of the voucher.

The only one near me already closed several months ago during the first round. 20% off is not that great a deal -- they used to have just plain ol' coupons for 40% off. Waiting makes you risk all the good books being taken though.

The store I went to had been doing it for like a day and a half when I went and it was mobbed, though the books I wanted were still there. No doubt because they're a sort of niche interest, being books about German military tactics (I got Infantry Attacks by Erwin Rommel, and Panzer Leader by Heinz Guderian). If I go back later I'll be looking for the book on the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS unit formation, so there is a good chance they'll still be there. Those books were more expensive though, so I'm not going to buy them at only 20% off when I'm stretched for money as is.

I've been waiting until mine marks down everything to roughly free. Then it might be a good place to pick up some new DVDs. I get all my books as ebooks now so I'll only buy a real book if it's super cheap and really great.... or like some big coffee table awesome book of stuff.

Borders is closing? I love Borders! (I've only been there once. They had a coffee shop. Coffee + books = :D )

PHP:
I got some coffee at a Borders once. I didn't know dick about coffee and the guy practically talked me through a flowchart to find out what I would like. It was an enjoyable experience.

I've always liked Borders better than Barnes and Nobel. Theres both like 5 minutes away right across the street from one another, and Borders had by far the better selection. Of course, it was like twice the size, but still.

So I went and looked at some things but it's mostly way too expensive still. I mean they sell DVDs at about 50% more than standard value and then all they've marked it down is 20%... so what's the point. And then you have the scenario where most of the books there you can get on amazon or on my kindle for half the cost or less. Really the only thing I wanted was some big cool coffee table book or something that getting electronically or online wouldn't be advantageous. The Borders near me seriously appears to have sold nothing more than usual. All of the shelves are as packed as usual. I think I might go back in a week or two and see if they're ready to drop the prices to something reasonable.

Yeah, it's true. The only place I buy my books from is at Amazon. In fact, that's the only place I buy anything from. Borders' closing doesn't affect me in any meaningful way because many other places, particularly online stores, offer a larger selection of materials to be read at lower prices.

What about used bookstores? I go to this really awesome one where most paperbacks are under $5. Built up almost my entire book collection from there. I guess you can still find books for a couple dollars cheaper if you buy used online, but it saves the hassle of worrying about shipping, plus supports local businesses.

Used books can be purchased online as well. But used bookstores probably are much more stable financially than the likes of Borders. I imagine its a lot like video game retailers, where their bread and butter is used games sales, since they make a much larger profit off each sale for a used game than they do with new.

There's actually a used bookstore down the road from me I've been meaning to check out. I feel like they focus on college textbooks though despite being nowhere near any of the local colleges. I suppose they can be cheaper when you don't have to consider shipping...

The only thing I liked about Borders is that you could just sit there as long as you wanted just reading and never buy anything. It's such a loiter friendly zone.

Agreed, and better prices too, in my experience.

Charity shops are where it's at.

But yeah, I remember Borders UK closing down and having this huge sale, and going in there and finding everything was still far more expensive than I could be bothered with.

I just spent $35 on some Orson Scott Card. I am satisfied.
