Some quotes from the article
"Last week when I was testing the latest version of RootkitRevealer (RKR) I ran a scan on one of my systems and was shocked to see evidence of a rootkit."

"At that point I knew conclusively that the rootkit and its associated files were related to the First 4 Internet DRM software Sony ships on its CDs. Not happy having underhanded and sloppily written software on my system I looked for a way to uninstall it. However, I didn’t find any reference to it in the Control Panel’s Add or Remove Programs list, nor did I find any uninstall utility or directions on the CD or on First 4 Internet’s site. I checked the EULA and saw no mention of the fact that I was agreeing to have software put on my system that I couldn't uninstall. Now I was mad."

"The entire experience was frustrating and irritating. Not only had Sony put software on my system that uses techniques commonly used by malware to mask its presence, the software is poorly written and provides no means for uninstall. Worse, most users that stumble across the cloaked files with a RKR scan will cripple their computer if they attempt the obvious step of deleting the cloaked files."

Who the hell do these ****ers think they are?

They keep the internet and your computer safe. Duh.

I got a question about this though....

Most people who know about it. Of course there will always be the minority who enjoy having a companies big fat dick up their ass, but the rest of us prefer not to.
This is only gonna cause more piracy.

I'm not boycotting sony for some little programme some stupid fool can't find the uninstall for. I've got a television, video, dvd players, mobile phone, mp3 player from sony, and many other things, and they are excellent, and reliable. Fook off ya nublets!

For the record they've offered up a way to uninstall it, although you have to fill out a form, so whatever.

But if I'm gonna boycott every company thats made spyware-type stuff, I won't be able to own a working computer.

Don't worry, Microsoft will sue them soon. And I'm not kidding.

Wow. Thanks for pointing this out. Had you not, my computer would have imploded and the offending CD would have proceeded to suck the souls out of every nearby thing, including my hypothetical kitten. But no, it was caught, so disaster was averted.

Cry more, I hear walmart is having a special sale on tin foil.

Of course he is right, dont be a sh!t head.

WOW. That guy never used a computer!! "I CAN'T UNINSTALL THING!!!!" Of course you can....dumb people need a good keyboard shock.

Actually I don't have to boycott Sony. They don't have anything worth buying in more recent years. Quality is going down hill. :)

But that is pretty bad. I generally hold shift anyway when putting music CDs in my PC for that reason. It's too bad for those who didn't know about it. That's not a good thing for Sony to keep putting on their customers. They are already getting a lot of flack for it.

Some DRM is ok and understandable but the direction a lot of the industry is going is pretty bad and ineffective against the real culprits. And non-windows systems will have no problem ignoring a lot of DRM efforts, such as the CD protection which only installs on Windows machines with autoplay enabled.

well duh, of course you can uninstall/remove everything, just some things require /alot/ more than just going into control panel > add/remove to do so.

Well, Sony of America includes new "software" on their discs, if it finds that you're trying to copy or burn the music, it literally makes your CD/DVD-DRIVE unusable, and that imo is ****ing stupid, even tho I'm against piracy, I love burning tracks and making a CD with a few specific songs from different soundtracks to use when I shower and shiet.

I'm glad I don't buy the music from the American division of Sony.:)

Oh so this might explain why my DVD R won't let me record anymore ever since a few months ago? I must have been hacked. Formating my drive should remove it right?

I've tried copying games and music CD's onto my hard drive before, for my personal use and making Mix CD's. I've never had any luck with it though, becuase I'm not very computer skilled.

I know i can put any music CD onto my Xbox and rip it to the hard drive so i can make my own sound tracks to play while im playing a game

I love how a few of you are saying that it's easy to get rid of manually when someone who actively works with this sort of stuff only just managed to dol it without screwing up his CD drive. No-one is ever going to stage an effective boycott against sony though. Even if all common computer users do it, you'll still get the kiddies, etc buying playstations and the like.

Oh and yes, this is illegal in the UK, as they did not state that they would be 'amending the operating system', copy protected is thrown around an awful lot and is rather vague these days.

First off all, I allready had a thread on this, but since no one actually takes a look in the music section, I guess it's better if there is one here.

Second, why the hell is wrong with you dipshits giving Reactor4 a hard time. Sony installs spyware on your PC and if you want to remove it you actually have to fill out a form.
So let me see, they want your personal information, cause they installed software on your pc that spies on you and can also **** up your burner. And your defending them.

That's illegal, by law you're allowed to make one backup copy of software.

I'm pretty sure that rule applies to music CDs.
