UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

..... error message I recieve on startup... HELP SOMEONE. :(

PC specs?
OS?
Bios type?
Self built?
Recently?
Recent upgrades?
Fresh install of the OS?

Sorry mate, but that could mean one of a million things (Google has 3,020 hits for UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME for example), we need more details.

When booting up to Win XP you may get a error that reads "Unmountable Boot Volume". This is probably because your boot.ini file is messed up.

So, what do you do about it, panic and try to mount your boot in your computer...... No that is probably not a good idea.

You can boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows

If for some reason that don't work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...
Type "chkdsk /r" then enter
When done type "exit" and hit enter.
This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

google is your friend :)

Specs:

3.4 ghz p4 with HT
512 x 2 pc3200
2 x 200 gb maxtor hdd's
x800 pro
Don't know what bios type (im ignorant when it gets too technical)

Recent upgrades? No not really, last time i updated windows was 2 weeks before the error.

Im worried its broken because Hurricane Frances knocked out my powere when it hit and my comp was wroking fine afterwards... just about a week later it stopped working.

If you need any more info ill be more than glad to give it to you. :(

wow the disk repair might take long considering the fact that my hd's are 200 gb each.. before start can someone tell me the chances that its just broken?

If i remember correctly you can see the listing of directory and files with repair cause you can type dir, and if everything seems okay then i guess its not broken..
