so...my parents want a 2nd computer.
if you have ADD, just scroll to the bottom
I have 3 little siblings, 13, 12, and 10...i'm 24 and out of the house.
Their current computer is some of my really old parts mixed in with their even older gateway P2 266MHz case and power supply. it's a P2 400, crap 3d card, etc.
They want a 2nd computer because the current one is in my little brother's room, and it causes a lot of problems with the other two kids doing their homework on it and being in his space, etc.
anyway, in the past, they gave me money to buy new computer parts and us the old stuff to upgrade their computer...so they want to do that again.
problem is, now my computer is so far ahead of theirs to the point that they need something from scratch. AND, they're going to need a new monitor unless they want this crappyish 15" i have :\
I'd really rather not buy a dell or gateway or anything because i'd rather not deal with all the BS.
here's my current setup:
Abit IC7
p4 2.4c
1024MB corsair XMS
gf4 ti4200
40GB 7200 rpm IDE
==================
i want to build them a new system while upgrading my system a bit. They only want to spend about $600.
I'd like to get a new video card (at least a 9700 pro) and possibly a new SATA HD since my mobo has a controller for it.
a 9700 pro is around $240, which would leave about
i could live with just getting a larger IDE drive.
==================
bottom line:
==================
anyone have any good budget ideas for mobo/cpu/ram/HD/case combo?
if i could get them something decent for around $400-450, giving them my gf4 and my HD they'd be happy.
I could use some of my extra xmas cash to spring for my own HD and part of the video card if it runs a bit over.
I'm thinking something like
AMD 2000-2400 (around $70 or less)
mobo/ram for this (this is where i need the most help)
cheap sound card...sb live OEM or something ($40)
9700pro ($240...they get my gf4 ti 4200)
WD special ed. 80GB (~$70...they get my 40GB WD)
i can get a great case locally for ~$80
so that adds up to about $500 without a mobo or RAM. the $600 is a bit flexible.
am i missing something? and what would be the best deal for mobo/RAM?
sorry the post was long :\
