CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester Integrated into Chip FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939
RAM - KINGMAX SuperRAM 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400
GPU - AOpen Geforce 6600GT 128MB 128-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X
Sound - Integrated (Possibly a Creative Labs 2, not nessecary atm)
HDD - SAMSUNG SpinPoint P Series SP1213C 120GB 7200 RPM 8M Cache Serial ATA150
CD Drive - SONY Beige 52X CD-R 32X CD-RW 52X CD-ROM 2M Cache IDE CD Burner
DVD Drive - TOSHIBA Beige 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM IDE
Monitor - Dunno yet, thinking of using current one, might upgrade.

All that equates to roughly $700 bucks, not including OS disk (which I can scrounge around for from my friends).

Please tell me anything wrong / incompatible with the setup, or any difficulties I may have with some of the hardware. Thanks.

Don't go AGP. Its dying, slowly.. I would seriously recommend you get the PCI-X version of the 6600GT and a PCI-X compatible board. It should cost around ~$700 give or take. You will be much happier next time you upgrade your graphics card.

Everything looks fine except I would go with what Shamrock suggested. I was going to suggest that you got some black CD-ROM bezels so that you don't have the beige showing on teh front of the case but it looks it comes with them! Will be a decent system when you get it up and running!

Just stick with the AGP I say. By the time PCI-X over takes AGP you can just build a new PC for cheap, no use spending more than you have to.

Alright...what exact specification am I looking for... PCI-X? I thought it was PCI-E? :< So many options....

Edit - OK, AGP? WTF. Please, can someone with a convincing background inform me?

I have $800, I don't / can't spend anymore!!!

Edit2 - RAM - CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400

I'd go with the setup you listed...
It's what i'd build with 700 bucks.
(cept with a raptor instead)

:p PCI-X is PCI-E. It is just another way of saying it. Wait for Asus. He will easily inform you on your best option. He is the number one stunna of HL2.net. :)

Here's the bottom line, just stick with the AGP since it'll work. Get a PCI-E if you're an upgrade whore.

It is not like it will cost much more. PCI-E is just as valuable as AGP. Like I said, its a dying breed. Even though it will take more than half a year for it to die completely, its still dying nonetheless. You will be happier with PCI-X. :)

I don't think he wants bleeding edge technology. I would be happier spending less on something that'll work for a long long time. He could easily get 4 years use out of that computer before building a new one.

Yeah, it's purely for casual gaming, HL2, DoW, ect ect, and it'll be a platform to get my C++ off the ground.

What you have there works and is a good price. The powersupply is an unknown brand (unknown reliability) but it looks to have enough power.

Although you should read this thread. =p (Gigabyte)

If you go PCI Express for the GFX card you will need a board that has a PCI Express slot instead of an AGP slot. No performance difference really (AGP is plenty good enough) but you would have no issues upgrading later if you go PCI Express. The PCI Express boards will cost more.

I'm not concerned about future builds, I'm confident I'll have plenty money for it.

Edit - And What's wrong with Gigabyte boards? :( Getting me all worried!

Bump...

Is there anything seriously fundamentally wrong with a Gigabyte mobo? Suggestions for other brands would be nice...

set up looks good to me but if u had 100 bux to spend u could get a x800xl card and theres nothing wrong with the price or brand of ur mobo

I'd recommend Asus, Abit, DFI and MSI. All good board-makers.

:)

Err no thanks, I don't buy old components.

they are 1-2 months old , u wont get better system for that money nowher !!1

I'm ordering an MSI K8N Neo Nforce4 for the system I'm ordering tomorrow. I suggest you do, too.

Oh, & I'm also going AGP. This decision was made because I plan on using this system for atleast 2 years before upgrading. If you want to upgrade again in the near future though, then you should go PCI-E.

Alright, I'm goin with AGP.

One question...what's a good PSU brand?

Edit - Antec?

Is 350w enough? I don't have any case lights
and only 2 80mm fans.
