Bullet damage through walls

Does any1 know exactly how this works?
As a sniper I have shot a number of people through the side of the window frame or wall. I also see that the MGs will shoot through walls. But do any other guns?
Also is there a limit to how far into the wall you can shoot; I mean can you only shoot through the wall near a window or door frame?
Finally is damage reduced by this?

Theres an official document containing this info im pretty sure at the official dod forums which is basically for mappers to reference. Yes some weapons can penetrate but only up to a certain thickness. The walls in dod source can be penetrated by rifles, mg only I believe. And yes the damage is lesser than a shot that does not have to penetrate a wall first.

should have been life in saving private ryan...guy fire thompson or garand into a thin wooden wall and kills a guy.

SMG's are already powerful enough, shooting people from a mile away through a wall would be even worse.

They could make it so that basically all weapons penetrate thin walls, but only at close range. So you could shoot som1 in the next room through the wall with an SMG; but only when standing close to the wall.
But rifles and Machine guns can penetrate at longer distances.

I get about 45-50% of my sniping kills via through walls, I love when people hide in the same areas in Avalanche.
