the question is, will hl2 support things like that? i'd be extremely pleased if the vehicles would show bulletholes etc. when they're hit. i'm not sure, if we were able to see that from the e3-video, so, does anybody know from different sources?

I know that Doom III has per pixel hit ditection, so it'd be possible there, but i htink that HL2 uses and advanced (and effective) hit box system.
You couldn't actually make "holes" but you could add relaistic looking decals...

yeah, of course, sorry :dozey: i meant decals. so, anybody knows?

I wonder if the decals could effect the alpha, normal, and/or displacement maps of a model/brush... if that worked you could make it so the player could shoot holes (they could also appear to have some depth if the normals or displacement maps can work via decals) through certain materials like thin wood, paper, curtains, etc.

... and if you watch the videos you should be able to see some wounds on people that get shot.

well there is hit decals on one of the resistance fighters in the Barricade vid, so i take it thats its possible, dont know about vehicle bullet holes, but i dont see why it wouldnt be possible

if you saw holes... great :D

well, ..., just possible would surely mean that it first had to be coded... i already hated such things in hl1... :x

again, i'm talkin of decals

Decals on models are definitely in HL2, you can see it in the barricade video. I thought one of the Valve guys confirmed this too.

CyberMan, decals cannot affect the materials (normal, radiosity, etc) of a brush, at least not traditional decals. However, I don't see any reason why decals in HL2 couldn't have a normal map, so bullethole decals could be shaded as though they were dents.

Even better: you can make metal parts shoot off the vehicle. Well I guess you can because when the ant lions get hit, parts of flesh fly around :)

and the model's missing a part then? o_-

No, but you can make metal and pieces of paint fly off in the form of particle's

yes, sure. but that's nothin new, there even was flyin blood in hl1 :)

offcourse they miss a part. if you look good at the bugbait video then you can see some leggs being shot of and antlions still crawling a bit.

thnx.. its the doom3 fat zombie as you can see.
