Hey people since today strange odors are coming from my pc, If traced them to the part that is responsible, underneath you have a pics(it's circeld component), anyway today it is for some reason also becoming way more heated than it used to be, and for no reason.

I haven't over clocked it, and it was happening during the time my comp was just playing winamp, so no d3 or hl2 to or somethiing else computer intensive

Anyways, can anybody first tell me the name of the component( you know like you have the CPU, the GPU, the RAM, Cooler) so I can google it, and if you have any additional info on what it is, what it does exept fan the heated air out, and what the problem might be, tell me please.
It mght be a lot of dust, that might cause that smell, I had that with an lamp, but the thing is I just cleaned the PC a few days ago, and blew air throug this thing to get the dust out of it, because I could not reach it, so no static elcerticity.
Thnx for your help in advance.

That's the power supply. How many Watts is it if you know. If you don't and it's smellin...it could be malfunctioning and I'd recommend getting a new one. Get at least 400W power supply. www.newegg.com has some
www.tigerdirect.com has some
or you can just go to bestbuy or similar store and buy one.

Well looking at my last pick, I think it maximum is 280 wats( I think), but the wierd thing is I now didn't close the case i left it open, I opend it to take a pick of my that part, and now I don't smell anything.
Thnx for your repy, but could you tell me is it safe to keep your case open, oh yeah and I also have plasic covers for the pc, that I always put on it, so no problems of dust when I'm not using it.

There'll still be a hell of alot of dust when its on.

I would recommend leaving it on if you have a few fans in it. If you leave it on, it will create a windtunnel effect which will help cooling greatly.

If you do decide to leave it open, remember to spray it with antistatic canned air every day or so.

Cases, if designed well, cool the hardware the best when closed. My case has 5 fans. I have 2 fans in the front, 2 in the back, and one on the side. The 2 in the front and one on the side pull air into the case, the 2 fans on the back push air out so I think I have good cooling.

Get a can of air and blow out any dust in the Power Supply. If the smell comes back, replace the unit.

I had the same problem yesterday .........this is wierd.
got real scared turned it off opened it up. closed it turned it back on and smell is gone ill take that advice Asus

Ok the powrsupply totally failed today, so can anybody give me some advice on buying a new one. My prevous one was 280 watt, can I buy one with 300 or 400, and do they have different sizes, or is there a standard, well anyway I have a via KT400 motherboard,512 ram, 9800 pro 128mb, can anybody tell what the best quality/price supply would be and a link.
Will my comp blow up if I buy a powersupply that has to much watts. Anyway above you have a pic of my comp.
I have looked on the links of gweedodogg69 but I don't know which one to buy?

 Antec 430 Watts- great choice and can be easily found(retailer)than any other type of PowerSupplies. Should be like $130 bucks at the most.

They are all usually the same size, least I think so. Mine is 400W and is the site of most. Heard from a computer guy "The heavier a power supply is, the better". Compare different 400W power supplies. A heavier one will hav more components so it regulates power and stuff better. A power supply does A LOT more than just supply power, pick a good one. A lot of things get replaced in a computer when really a bad power supply is to blame.

Ok thnx. hey but could you also give me the link to a site with reviews of powersupplies, cause I see on one of your links that a powersupply with 500 watt(ultra x-conect) costs more than an with 550 watt(diablo), so there must be difference in quality or maybe the soud it produces? Anywas more tips are welcome.
O and some of them have like a fan opening on their top, why, do some cases have their a opening there to cause mine hasn't,do I hae to watch out for that to.

Those Ultra Xconnect are actually great power supplies. I'd recommend it.
Also Antec, Enermax, Fortron and Thermaltake are all great PowerSupplies.

By the way, the second fan on some of the PowerSupplies points down to suck air from the CPU out.

This is probably the best PSU around now considering the price/performance ratio.

Looking at it against the ANTEC 430W, it either draws or wins comparatively on every rail, and is [apparently] producing 50W less.

Antec 430W: 3.3V@28A, 5V@36A, 12V@20A
Tagan 380W: 3.3V@28A, 5V@37A, 12V@22A

EDIT: 200th Post!

Hey but can that powersupply go in to my PC, you can see above my specs, cause I don't know it will work with my motherboard. Thnx in advance everyone who helps me ;)

Oh **** I have just been to tagens site and it says they are compatible with amd k7/k8, this probably means it won't go with my kt400 right or is it that they show what the newest motherboard is tha is compatible with it and plder are to.

Hmmm. I always thought that any atx psu would work on any atx mobo as long as they had the same number of pins (which can be fixed with an addaptor thingy)

Aha, and how much would such an adapter cost?

(BTW more replies and suggestions are welcome also.)

Ok thx, but I have just one more question, see there is something wierd going on, cause me and my dad just open up the comp, then we tried to turn it on, now that does not work as I stated earlier, but the little red lamp on the motherboard is on but the computer won't start, then we open up the powersupply and I think I saw what was broken but my dad disagrees, so I have taken 2 pics to show the red lamp and one where I think the powersupply is broken. So can anyone take the time to look at them and tell me if I'm right, cause I don't want to buy a new powersupply if my old one still works.

Here I think something is leaking out of the blue cilinders
redaroundtroublejpeg5tq.jpg

Here you can see the red lamp that does burn on the motherboard even though the comp won't start.
[img=http://img141.exs.cx/img141/7271/redlampphoto8pm.th.jpg]

Anyways if it is not the powersupply can it be that my processor is fried due to static electricity, cause like I said in my first post I cleaned my comp with a soft brush and a hair dryer from dust a day before it wouldn't start, so can it be that because the case was open during a couple of hours while I was working that static electricity fried it, cause someone said here that if I wan't the case to stay open I need to spray it with anti-static air.
Again thnx for your help in advance.

The blue cylinders are capacitors, it's not good if they are leaking stuff :/

Yeah, but is that a leak or is it just the way it is glooded, if you can tell the difference pleaze post, causeI think it is a lea cause I think I remmeber seeing a picture on the net with a leak like that, but can you or anyone else tell why the red lamp burns when I hook up the comp to the elctricity supply in the wall ,if the powersupply is broken,

Is the leak inside the power supply or is it on your mobo?

when my power supply failed on me i simply went to the local computer store, got a new one, put it in, and turned it on. I heard a TERRIBLE grinding noise as i turned it on...like when a power-plug rub's against one of your fans ya know? SO i turned it off looking for it....after half an hour of on off on off, i figured out it was the bottom fan on the power supply. After taking it apart and messing with it a few times i figured out the stupid chinese or whoever put the fan in upside down so that the blades were rubbing against the grill!! So if your's does this, don't panic, just open it up, flip over the bottom fan, and start over.

Luckly I don't have your problem.
That leak is inside the powersupply if it is a leak, IMO it is a leak. But see the wierd thing is, can it still be that the powersupply is broken and does not supply my comp with enouh power even though the red lamp burnes, so that must mean it either is broken but can supply enough power to power the lamp but not for the comp to start, or it is not broken.

Just get a new powersupply. Even if it isn't broken it'll be a win-win situation - the one you had before (being rated for 230W) was more than likely absolute rubbish.

While I'm not sure how your motherboard works, it's entirely likely that the LED is being powered by the battery on the motherboard and not the powersupply.

Ok people which is better

Capacitors do leak and it looks more like crusty acid. They do use a glue on the powersupplies to hold the components in there, which is what it looks like from the blury photo.

Oh, I'm sorry to bother you people again. But so my problem may not be the powersupply, I always thought it was the powersuppy because the coputer just turned off and wouldn't start after that bad odor that seemed to be coming from the supply.
Well now I have told you that that the red lamp on my motherboard burns when I connect the comp to the powersupply so could somebody explain if it is then still possible that the powersupply is broken, secondly does anybody know what else it could be if it isn't the powersupply, sorry again but 65,- euro's for a new powersupply is a lor of money, ands especially if it turns out not to be the problem.

Oh yeah and if I have to buy a new powersupply is one with 25/27 db a loud or silent one.

have a mate come over with his computer, take out his powersuply (if it's the right fit, etc) plug it in your comp and see if theres still any funky smells.....

Unfortunatly I don't think any of my mates will do it, and I can't use the one of my old pc unfortunatly:(

Anyone else, he! does anyone else have any ideas or someway to help me?

What with all the fuss you're spending on this, i'd just say go with a new PSU. That way, even if it's not the problem, you still got one better than that 230 piece of junk that's probably been struggling to keep your comp powered (if that's possible :E )

Well yeah thats true, but 50,- is for me 4 years of allowence, and I don't have time to have a job because school is taking all my time. And it's not that we are poor, it's just that again my school costs a lot of money and we have a lot of family in bosnia and croatia that my parents insist on visiting every year and that costs a shitload of money.
(BTW my parents almost killed me when they found out I bought hl2, and are not eager to spend 50 on a psu for no reason(so I need to be sure), the only reason they might do it cause I need that PC for homework cause some programs don't work on this old PC)

That connector goes into the motherboard. Here is a picture of my motherboard and where its 12v connector goes on.
