buy a new dvd rom

Should i buy a new dvd rom? I cant load HL2 or any cd's.
I tried swapping dvd rom with my older pc(which wud load hl2 installation) but it brought up disk failure system disk required or whatever on start up. so i gave up on that. Ive been told that when you do any major hardware changes XP hates it and u have to reinstall XP to do the changes. true??

People have been having problems with their DVD ROMS / writers reading the disks. I don't know what to suggest unfortunately, if you don't mind buying a new one then I suppose you could try that. Just hope you don't have the same problem!

I bought a new DVD ROM hoping it would fix my HL2 problems starting the game. Made no difference what-so-ever to the problem.

I would try updating the firmware on your drive if you can. If that doesn't fix the problem, it's probably not an incompatibility problem with the DVD drive and Steam.

got a brand new cd/dvd external usb 2 external dirve just for half-life, installed hell-life on both machines, nothing, no response from tech support either
