My friend wants to buy a CD Key on ebay. I'm telling him that he's probaby going to get scammed, but he insists otherwise. What do you guys think about this? Have any ebay stories about buying fraudulent cd keys?

Let's see what happens...

Caveat emptor.

Don't do it, most of those cd keys are binded to steam accounts, which you need an email and password to access. So unless they sell the steam account (which is illegal) or detach that cd key from their account for a processing fee of $10 (which is HIGHLY unlikely) then the purchase should be ok. Of course you also have the chance the cd key was made from a generator or made up at random, and the small chance its a legitamite unused copy. So take the chance amigo! Its your call...and your loss. You were warned by us and VALVe!

He will almost certainly get scammed. The CD-key will either be fake, purchased using a fake/stolen credit card number or in use by someone else.

If he wants to waste $10 he can send me a cheque made payable to Mr. Chris Deeming and I'll give it a good home.

Why stop at $10 when he can send me... One milllion.... yen

Warning: Do Not Purchase Steam Accounts On Ebay

There are a number of people selling Steam Accounts (HL2, Bronze, Silver, Gold) on EBay. DO NOT PURCHASE THEM:

1. It is against our EULA to sell Steam Accounts
2. They are either Stolen accounts or opened with stolen credit cards.
3. The accounts will be closed and we have been informed that PayPal / EBay will *NOT* help since no merchandise physically changed hands.

He is 99.9999% likely to get scammed. Tell him this, and when he comes whining back to you that it doesn't work, laugh at him for a while. Stop and Breathe normally for a brief period, and then recommence laughing. Repeat as Necessary.

His argument is that if people do scam others, then they would have bad feedback on ebay. Not that I've looked into this extensively, but I looked at one bidder's history, and it had good feedback. Any ideas on this?

And no, I'm not supporting his idea of buying through ebay. I KNOW he's gonna get scammed. I just want to know what to say to him. Trying to look out for my buddy, you know?

There was the case in the last few weeks of the people who bought from ebay having their accounts disabled as the cards used to buy them had been fraudulently acquired. The person who perpetrated this scam has since been arrested and has lost his job due to the detective work of community members. Some of them have managed to get the cash refunded through paypal, others might not.

Scammers always have great, crystal clear feedback.

There is a massive thread on steampowered about this, I think it's titled "my account" and it must have about 50+ replys.
