Cache Vefification-did it work?

Ok I'vce been having the same problem as quite a few people out there. Play the game for5 minutes and it crashes. Usually with the looping sound. I've tried two different sound cards, a SB Live and the on board C-media. The on board can't last 2 minutes without crashing while the Live can go a little longer.

However to get to the point..I restarted Steam and ran the verification for HL2 hoping it might fix my problem but I have noticed a few things:

1. It didn't fix the problem. I still crash after two to five minutes (however I did manage to get past the Transporter this time)
2. If I run the verification again it resets the "completed percentage" to 98% and downloads again. Surely if I have already verified the files it does not need to download the files again?

Anone else having or seeing these problems.....?

Chip: AMD XP3000+
GRX : Radeon 9800 Pro

i tried the cache verification tool to solve start up problems, only to find it wanted to re-download HL2 and CS:S from Steam. As I have the retail CD, this seem'd a waste of my time.. So I wiped HL2 and CS:S completely, and fired up the installer only to be confronted with a blue screen in XP.

Ah, such joy.

didnt solve anything for me same memory crash time after time seriously thinking of asking for a refund now before I miss my chance to get a refund

it worked for me. the amount acquired went back to 98% and redownloaded the corrupted parts.
@budgie55: Keep trying. it's worth it :stare:

I took my soundblaster out of my pc and used my c-media.
Works fine now.

What drivers?

Grimkeeper what drivers are using for your c-media chipset?

I think I am using 5.12.01.0044
