Which do you prefer and why?

I'm a campaign guy, 4 humans up against a computer controlled environment is a lot of fun.

While I really enjoy Versus when things are working well more often than not things don't work that well and I just find it really frustrating.

They're both awesome, but Versus is better. It's just so satisfying to play through with human players controlling boss attacks trying to stop you, and then turn the tables and trying to best their performance.

Last night I was playing with Repiv, Nitre and Munro on my team against 3 clanned guys and a random I know from TF2.
We made all three of the clan ragequit.

Earlier in the night I killed a guy from full health to dead at the start of the Hospital finale and he kicked me from his clan's server.

Campaign is amazing fun, but damn Versus just adds a whole other wonderfully griefy dimension to it.

Edit: Though I believe that the difficulty affects how enjoyable VS mode is more than Campaign. Expert the zombie team is too strong, Easy they're too weak. Normal - can be ok if the players are crap, but overall Versus Advanced is the best imo.

I can't decide! they're both great.

I'm such a rebel, I voted for Vesus even though I haven't played that.

I can see the appeal of both, but campaign I kind of enjoy because it's an adventure with a narrative, where as the Versus mode just feels more like a competition.

*waves to Vectyr

Both are awesome, but I vote campaign because its atmosphere is unique as there aren't that many co-op games like this. Versus, on the other hand, sometimes reminds me of similar scenarios seen in many other games. It's still crazy amount of fun.

I love both, but I voted campaign because I just dont get the scoring in versus, how exactly do you ensure a victory?

Getting as far as possible with much health as survivors. The infected are there basically to stop the survivors from advancing further.

I'm more of a Versus kind of guy. It's more fun to coordinate and execute plans as the infected instead of a "RUN AND PROTECT" mentality.

*Edit*
On the scoring for Versus...

You get as many points as the Average distance traveled by all survivors towards the end. If you all get to the end, 100 points. If 2 died at 50% and 2 finished, then you get 50 points, etc...
The game adds up all your health at the end, and tacks that on. Make sure you use your medpacks at the end!
You get a "map difficulty* multiplier, depending on which level you are on. It starts at 1.00 times, no extra points at level one, while the finale is 2.00 times your score.
Then for each survivor, you get a multiplier for that. Obviously, if you get 4 survivors to the saferoom, then your score gets x4'd.

I love both, but I voted campaign because I just dont get the scoring in versus, how exactly do you ensure a victory?

Points for health of all survivors to make it to the safe room, points for how far you get (100% if you make it), a multiplier based on difficulty of map, a multiplier for how many survive (up to 4x).
If you don't survive you get points for the % of distance to end of map you get to, and the level difficulty multiplier.
Zombies get points for damage dealt.

Teams swap, repeat for both. Each map's scores added to get final campaign total. Highest score wins.

Basically hurt the enemy team when you're a zombie, get your team to the finish when survivor.

I can't decide between the two. Campaign is obviously more polished and balanced. The spawning and AI director in VS can be horribly unbalanced sometimes. Sometimes one team can get almost no horde rushes, T2 weapons right away, a shitload of pipebombs and be able to just stroll through a map when the other team has to face 2 tanks, 3+ horde rushes, T1 weapons only and 1-2 molotovs.

That being said, VS is still usually a ton of fun, especially on Advanced difficulty.

Now, i haven't tried versus mode yet, but i get the feeling that it won't be as enjoyable as the campaign mode. It might sound weird, but i've got plenty of versus games from valve, and whilst i know this game is unique and very different in style to those, i just wonder whether i'll enjoy it as much. Whereas the campaign mode of this game is definitely unique to me, i've never played anything quite like it. Although i can see what Pitz is getting at when he says it's more fun to co-ordinate and execute plans. I'm sure the best way of finding out will be to just try it and see !

Both depends on how many of my friends are on..

What I hate the most is a team of Survivors that actually work together, and then the infected are just silent solo artists. Makes for a huge rape fest.

I have yet to decide this i think, since i haven't played much of Death Toll or Dead Air. However, i think that if Versus was implemented for all the campaigns (which it will in time, i'm sure) then i think Versus would win.

Admittedly, when you work together with a great team and completely muller the survivors, its such a great feeling.

I play a lot more Versus, I do like it a bit more, however it has some problems.

1. Assholes leave if they don't get to play infected, mainly whiny preteens.
I ****ing hate being in a server and hearing a prepubescent voice through the mic say, "Ehhh, someone switch, I wanna play infecteddd", Jesus ****ing Christ.

2. Sometimes people are way to bent on getting more points in Versus, which makes it un-fun. Why you ask? Because the infected rush the humans ASAP. To me, the fun thing about Versus is attacking the humans throughout the entire map, not just the beginning. Rushing them in the beginning is cheap and boring no matter which side you are on.

Fun > Winning

If you can't defend the infected hitting you at the start of the match, then you either suck, or have a shitty team...

hint: get pitzy on your team.

Often true, but not always, take for instance the 3rd level of No Mercy where you are walking between those allyways right when you get out of the safe room. My team of infected:

Boomer drops down, covers everyone in bile, two hunters (me one of them) pounce on two team mates, as the two are fighting off a horde, one is taken out by a smoker, once me and the other hunter kill our two victims, I pounce on the other. The game is over within a matter of 3 minutes.

So don't play Versus on Expert or Advanced with shitty teams.

Right, Right, how could I forget to check the "Is good at Teamwork" option when joining a game lobby.
;)

Also, I thought there are no difficulties to chose from on Versus.

Holy shit, you can change difficulty? I just leave it at stock default...which I'm guessing is Normal.

Awwww <3

This one time, I got to be the tank within the first 30 seconds of a game, so I incapacited two people while the hunter and smoker got the other two. Round was over in less than a minute or two. So we switch, I'm playing as a survivor and no tank for the other side, we get to the end mostly unscathed. Anyway, I'm playing infected again and I get the tank spot, again within the first 30 seconds, but this time I just stand there and let them shoot me. The other infected ask me why I didn't attack and I said it was cheap and I wanted to give the survivors a chance. They vote kicked me outta the game.

It's called "inviting HL2.net members only" games :)

Speaking of, I'll probably rent a server for the hl2.net L4D steam group sometime soonish(TM)

Also, I thought there are no difficulties to chose from on Versus.

There are, but only from the ingame voting menu. All the normal parameters seem to be changed, including zombie hp and damage.

Versus on Expert is just silly. Teams almost never make it to the safehouse and never make it through the finale - unless the teams agree to cheese it for some reason.

I prefer playing on Advanced. Survivors can still make it, but only if they play smart with proper teamwork - unlike normal where there has to be a big skill disparity for the zombies to completely win a round.

Really, everyone should try the different Versus difficulty levels before passing judgement on it being too hard/easy for one team or the other.

Fact is, not everyone is around when I need a L4D fix. Going on a random lobby is always quicker and easier than planning and making a game work with your buds.

I had a go on Verses this evening and ****, it was fun. I didn't do much noticable, as I get kept getting landed as a Hunter and I suck at pouncing on people, but this one time I was a Boomer, some guy on our team grabbed Louis but couldn't drag him all the way up the side of this building so he's suspended about a metre off the floor with no zombie attention. I stroll along, barf everywhere then sit back and watch as about 50 zombies start chewing on the guys bottom half.

It's ****ing brilliant watching a human getting eaten when they're down/incapitated.

Also got lucky enough to be blessed with the Tank for about a minute. The humans were it the start of chapter 3 No Mercy and in the office room that overlooks the truck depot. I crash into the office, knock Francis and Bill down and go in for the kill only to have some irritating annoyance firing shotgun rounds into me. I turn and see Zoey standing in the window so I bound over and in one swoop, send her flying about 40 metres right out of the window and into the yard. She hits the deck, staggers to her feet and has the unfortunate timing to be rushed by a bunch of zombies as she tries to make her way over to the lift. Pretty sure she was either killed or put down, but either way, I manage to kill both Bill and Francis with no trouble after that. :D

As tank don't bother trying to kill other players, your time is usually better spent trying to knock them all off their feet, esp if a hunter or two on your team are around to pounce while they're on the ground to finish em off.

I said Versus, they are both great in my opinion. They have their good points and their bad points.

Bill and Francis were the only two people left alive. A Hunter and Smoker had already spawned to finish Zoey off (I was also too lazy to chase after her because if she got to the lift I'd be stuck on the floor absorbing her bullets) and the survivors were blatently doomed.

But in general, yeah, thats a given with the Tank.

I haven't played this game, and I don't think I understand versus... Is it only humans versus boss infected, or are there regular zombies too?

Regular zombies too, aye. They provide the main bulk of the game, and the infected ''Bosses'' are there with them controlled by other players.
