Can chat messages be turned off?

In CS:S, I un-checked the option for Chat Messages but they still show up while I'm playing. Any way to shut them off entirely? Frankly, I don't need the constant updates from other players about:

1) how much someone sucks
2) how much everyone sucks
3) how much the map sucks
4) how much the game sucks
5) how much John Kerry sucks
6) how much George Bush sucks
7) the degree to which they laughing, in a manner that can only be measured in units of loudness (ie: lol, LOL, or LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
8) how much they're lagged
9) how much they pwn
10) how hitting F10 will maximize fps, switch teams, plant the bomb, display stats, enable cheats, etc. LOL!!!!

I actually find the chat messages are hard to follow. Seems they update to fast or something.. now the radio messages.. I would love to turn those off. I quit playing BF1942 until the developers added the ability to turn off the Radio Messages. I need a Ride!
