Can I back up HL2 game data once it's unlocked?

As it is right now I could obviously burn all the GCF files to disc in order to create a backup. I hope there isn't some security lock on the folder where Steam-acquired files pertaining to Half-Life 2 reside. What I mean, is when we're finally allowed to unlock and play the game, will we be able to back the data up on CD if we so wish, or will it be protected from such an act? Now more than ever I want to get it via Steam, but the security and comfort of having the data on physical CDs is a big plus for me. Maybe no one can answer this as of yet. Any info most appreciative.

There shouldn't be anything preventing you from copying it.

A file can't put a read lock on itself.

If I wanted to copy the files to disc and then re-copy it back into the game folder would it work just the same?

Yup.

By being "locked" it really just means they're encrypted.

We really need a forum FAQ. Seems this question is asked at least once a day.

I remember that I had to format AFTER I had gotten the HL2 and CS:S beta preloaded. I copied my Steam dir to a different drive, formatted, reinstalled Steam (used the same account name,) shut down Steam, copied the files back over, and it all worked fine.
