Can i get rid of the gcf files?

In my steamapps folder, there are 13 gcf files, some of which are kinda big. Im wondering if i can get rid of these? or are they necessary to play the game (i didnt want to delete them, in case they were necessary)

Nope, all VALVe games run off of the gcf files. So having them there uses as much hard drive space than if they were extracted into folders.

So your not loosing any hard drive space.
