Can not install HALF-LIFE2 because of freeze

I have just bought Half-Life 2 and a new DVD drive to play the game. Problem is I can't even install Half-Life 2.
When it goes to installing source models.gcf it freezes and crashes my computer. There is no problem with the DVD rom because I tried it with serveraly disks and they work fine. Please Help

My spec is
AMD XP 1600
256mb gfx card
512mb ddr ram
80gb hard drive

Update firmware on your drives.

And make sure you install counter strike source with it.

Hrmmmmmm, Can you do me a favor? Show me what's actually on the CD or DVD itself because if it's what I think it is, I might be able to fix your problem really easily.

is it a legit copy of Half Life 2?..if yes, goto start, control panel, admistrative tools, then event viewer, look in there to see what errors u have, they will be located at the top.

Ok first grab the steam installer from,

The site is being oooby doooby slow for me at the moment, if you have a steam installer actually on the disc install it from there.

Install steam and create an account, or if you have already made an account log in with it.

Then look on your DVD and find a folder that is full of .gcf files.

Than navigate to this folder in the steam install.

And copy the contents of the folder with the gcf's on the DVD into that directory.

site is a bit slow for me as well.
I already have steam installed, and found the directory but there is not folder on the DVD that contains any gcf files.
The only 2 folders are bin and directx which both do not have any gcf files.

Do you have any .cab files?

Can you show me a screenshot of the dvd's contents(you can upload it on this site - Go Advanced option) I bought off steam itself so I have no idea what's on it.

Good you have winrar.

You see hl2-hl22-hl23-hl24-hl25 open those and they should have the gcf files, I'm going to assume you have a basic knowledge of winrar.

Also I would suggest going to your DVD drives manafactures site and getting an update to your DVD drive(it's called firmware)

DAM, I now try to extract HL2.cab using winrar and it freezes on it me again.

I have a LITEON COMBO DRIVE 16x DVD ROM. It is currently in the slave mode since my cd-rom is in the master.

Find out the product number, and select the firmware update.

Also this is a long shot but take out your cd rom and set the dvd as master slave.

OK, I have switched the DVD onto master, I tried installing which installed for longer but it then crashed half way through.

The firmware I cannot even download on the liteon website.

Ok, that seems like the newest firmware update. The download link actually downloads from the liteon site, I wonder why you can't actually find it.

lol this is turning out to be a bad day for me.
The firmwire program goes up to 100% and crashes.
Plz kill me...

If you have a freind who has the game, get it off him or bring his DVD around.

Just try extracting each gcf file from the cab and leave the gcf that crashes and then download it through steam.

Depending on your connection you can actually download it from steam.
