Can Someone Explain what AA and AF do?

I heard that AA makes the lines look smoother on characters and weapons and AF makes textures on walls look smoother. Is this correct?

AF, not smoother but sharper. AA makes edges look smoother. Plus wrong forum, this is for the tec guys.
