Hey people!

I've been out of the loop with PC equipment of late, and I think it's time to upgrade my AMD athlon 3700+, get 2 GB of RAM, and a new mobo.

I'll probably also upgrade my vidcard, Nvidia Geforce 7600 GT, pretty soon too, but I haven't the money for that now.

I can spend like about 400 bucks total to get the 2 GB RAM, processor, and mobo.

Any suggestions as to which processor I should look at to begin with? And would you guys recommend intel or AMD?

Intel Quad cores are going to be around $230 on July 22nd, if you want to wait that long. You can get a decent motherboard for around $130, and 2GB of RAM tends to go for about $150.

Agh, I'm tempted to wait but Dual-core would satisfy me enough right now.

Yeah, dual core probably would satisfy you for now.

Although a number of developers have or are working on tech that uses quad core for their games (like Valve and Alan wake) which isn't suitable for dual core or at least doesn't have the same speed up using the effects. Choices...

Not only is dual core considerably cheaper but will do the job in some cases better than the quad can. Unless your some multitasking champion you do not need a quad.

what's the difference between socket 939 and LGA 775?
Socket 775 supports Intel's current Core 2 Duo line up. Socket 939 is a discontinued AMD socket. You'll only find what vendors have left in stock.

Well to be correct 775 replaced 478 and started with the Pentium 4s. Not all 775 motherboards support Conroe.
